Just a quick tour. No cleaning up or styling. This is how it is right here and right now.
This is the spot in our caravan where I have been checking my emails and am about to sit down and write this blog. We have wireless internet so a few of us can be online at once which is great.
That bit of white tape on the far left is double sided velcro tape. Farmer Bren is obsessed with it. Everything is tidied and rolled and secured with the stuff.
Straight in front of me is the map of Australia with our route so far drawn up the middle. We've come a long way in five weeks. Is that Miss Jazzy eating Vegemite crackers outside the door? Why I think it is.
And there is Miss Indi. At last count she had 57 mosquito bites covering her and is incredible itchy. Hello Indi!!
There's my bunch of flower squares sitting waiting for me on the table. It's too hot here to think of making woolly clothing so I'm making granny squares instead.
The washing line. How cute is the caravan peg bag Miss Michelle made for me! Thanks for making it and sending it to me Michelle! Doing the laundry is so much more fun now.Getting mail on the road has been such a thrill.
Oh and there's Farmer Bren giving our neighbour a lesson on how to set up her ipad.
A quick peek inside her van and look who we've found. Miss Pepper and her friend Christian. The truth is I heard these guys long before I saw them. They are a noisy bunch.
Twenty minutes after I wrote this, I was about to press publish, when I looked out the window and saw this. The start of a neighbourhood game of hide and seek.
Ready or not here I come...
Ok, time to put the barbecue on now. Tofu and salad wraps for dinner here. Indi and I have a date to play bingo at the bar later on.

Reminded me of the cure, initially for sand flies, midgies!
It's made with a combination of Dettol, Eucaplytus, Baby Oil, Metho or when all else fails use Vicks Vaporub to ward off the little blighters!
I'm sure Google will have quantities etc.

ReplyDeleteI loved feeding the moonfish bread at dusk on the jetty in Darwin. they're so huge. Love Darwin! didn't find too many caravan parks we liked there though - all on top of each other and the only spot we had anything stolen on our whole trip around Australia. Hope you found a good one.

Bren is right - double sided velcro is the best. I have rolls of it stashed everywhere just in case I need some.

My advice for mossie bites... paw paw ointment or straight pure lavender oil, both from chemist. you've covered a great distance. isn't it a priviledge to be able to travel our vast land so freely. safe and happy travels. ReplyDeleteYour holiday pics are so much fun Kate...It looks so warm there...We leave in 3 days for a short break...I think your holiday has finally made my mind up...we pack our bags and head for the sunny coast...2 weeks of sun surf and hmmmm...shopping...oh how I miss the "big" shops...I am looking forward to mega thrift stores...and crafty goodness...

ReplyDeleteI have been reading your blog for a couple of months now and have been thinking of you one this journey, my family did a similar thing when my brother and I were still at school, was heaps of fun!! I was just thinking it was quite uncanny that some of our friends from here have been doing a similar thing (except they have just been through WA) and they are also in Darwin at the same time your family is. What was more uncanny is there they are in your last photo...the man with the young girl on his knee...how bizarre!!! Hope you are having a lovely time away....Jess

ReplyDeleteCan you see why we happily lived in Darwin for over 6 years, it's fantastic!! We felt like were on holidays the whole time, well me, housewife & all, husband, not so much, he kept going to war.
ReplyDeleteIf you need a doctor, we used to go to this crazy witch doctor in Nightcliff, imagine barefoot, in kaftans, he would tell my children he was going to eat them (thank goodness they don't freak out easily) & hell, he bulk billed, this is unheard of in the NT!!
Promise me you'll go to Parap Markets on Saturday, then Nightcliff Markets on Sunday, they are fantastic & cheap, great food/ organic produce, you'll feel right at home. Plus best smoothies & Thai Beef Salad EVER. Mindil Beach Markets on Thursday & Sunday nights are just for tourists. Filled with made-in-Bali crap, boring.
So missing my wonderful life up there, swimming all year round & sunshine, ahhh, so glad we lapped it up while we were there - best place ever to raise a large family. Try to take a day trip to Mandorah (by boat, don't drive) & an East Point sunset. Lots of love, have a blast, love Posie
We lived in caravan parks every year for a week or two as we made our way to Far North Queensland from either the South Coast of NSW or from Alice Springs, NT. It was a good life. Simple. Nourishing. Social. Peaceful. Easy. Good. x

Ahhh ... the memories. We lived in a caravan for quite some time when we first arrived in Darwin. That was during the wet season though... not so nice as this time of year.
