Hunting echidnas & native bees.

This writing a book business is hard.

Harder than I thought it would be.

I had thought that if you can write a blog then surely you can write a book, but now I'm not so sure. They're quite different.

My brain hurts from thinking so hard, my lower back aches from sitting at the computer for so long, and all of a sudden there are a gazillion other things I would rather be doing. Even scrubbing the bathroom seems like a fun adventure...I could put on some music...get the old toothbrush and bicarb out... Don't even mention the neglected basket of crochet constantly calling me from the other room.

Sometimes I feel so inside my words that I forget that the rest of the world is still spinning. That the family needs to be fed, that underwear needs to be washed and teacher's necklaces finished. I'm in a book bubble.

I know I've been given an awesome opportunity and I am grateful. I know that when I sit down and focus, the words come and mostly I like them. And I know that I am lucky enough to be working with some very talented people.

And most importantly, I know how blessed I am to have my funny little family to ground me. For berries to collect, an echidna to follow, native bee hives to look out for, sticks and slugs to name and tell stories about and the most wonderful farmer boy to grab my hand and remind me to be in the moment and to remember to breathe.

One word at a time.

One hole in a bead at a time (every few paragraphs).

I'll get there.

How are you going?
Are you getting there?

xx

  1. Stick to the writing Kate - it'll definitely be worth it, I promise <3
I have been writing a novel for nearly 4 years now I and plan to finish it this Summer. Sometimes the only thing that keeps me going is knowing how great I'll feel when I can write "THE END"!
    Have a Merry Christmas! xx

  3. It's hard work, but you write so well! Just keep getting the words down, and it will all come together at some point. When I'm doing lots of writing, I even dream about it and in the morning the words flow out of me! xK

  5. I had 216 pieces of bunting to sew into 108 bunting flags and now that they have to be finished by Saturday, I have decided that I should stop doing other stuff and start doing them. Unlike you, though, the mindless task of sewing them then turning and ironing them can be accompanied by some crap telly or a chick flick or my ipod turned up high.

Hope you get a chance to take a break over Christmas and just breathe and stretch and follow the echidnas, hon.

  10. I love the photo of your farmer boy with his hand outstretched to call you into them. To be part of the moment, rather than watching and recording. What a good and wise and real and wonderful man he seems.
book book book. Ah. I'm so excited, I can't wait. And yes - like Bearded Pigeon I need a perfect excuse to come to Melbourne. Your book launch is just that. In your glorious farm no less....??
I too have a basket of crochet work and stitching and all sorts of pieces that are waiting waiting for me to come back to them. It is good knowing they sit and patiently wait. (I do wish something the yarns would untangle themselves while waiting).

    hugs and kisses, E xx

  17. wonderful news that you're writing a book...i loved that process - some days i was the queen of procrastination but then when i sat, and focussed and became a channel for the words that needed to be born. Ahhh. It's a good feeling. And you're writing that book as part of weaving hope for a new world i suspect. Noble work and so much needed. Go you. It'll be a wild ride and it will be GOOD!

  28. Today, I went to the beachfront with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear." She put the shell to her ear
and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.

She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is completely off topic
but I had to tell someone!
