Summer words.

The strangest thing has happened. I feel like I've run out of blog words.

Perhaps I've used them all up in chapters and lists and patterns for my book. Perhaps the stuff I usually write about here seems petty compared to the fear and devastation and sadness being experienced by so many affected by the terrible bush fires in our country's south. Or maybe I can blame it on the heat and the wind and the summer school holidays.

I'd like to write words about the rhythm of our hot, summer days. Words about opening my eyes wider and letting my five year old be the tour guide in my quest to rediscover the magic in my day to day. Words about really getting in amongst it and playing with my girls, not as a means to occupy them and pass the time, but as a way to discover joy. But I can't. I feel a bit too self conscious and the words feel wishy-washy and hippie even.

So today there is no story. No description. No list.

Just thoughts for all those affected. May they find security and peace and safety and home and happiness once more.

xx

  1. It is a terrifying thought, to lose everything in a flash. We live with that reality in Australia and it is just as shocking and scary as it every year, especially hearing about the fires lit on purpose. I think you haven't run out of words, but rather you are observing silence. beautiful photos as always xx Ruby

  4. I've found that I don't really have any words for blogging at the moment. It seems that, for me, blogging is a creative outlet for a less than challenging current work environment. So now that I'm on holidays I'd rather be out "doing" rather than blogging. As my hols are over soon and I go back to work Wednesday, I'm sure the words will come back in a flood. Sadly all too soon! Enjoy the peace and summer while you can.

  6. Kate,

    Thank you for writing.

Thank you for writing even when there are no words.
Your words have not landed on me, as hippie or wishy washy, but honest, unaffected, kind, full of personality and integrity.
... coming out of the woods to comment for the first time to tell you that.

to letting go and allowing five year olds guide; yes!

    and to the south; yes.

  10. Your words were lovely as they were, Kate. My thoughts and prayers are also with those in the Tassie bushfires. May the rain hurry up and calm this horrible inferno.

Love your photos and love your thoughts on connecting with your girls. I'm doing the same with my boy and I just love it. Lots of games and walks (when it's cool enough) and swims and hanging out. The stuff memories are made of, for sure:)

I imagine your book is taking a lot of the words straight on out of you;) We all enjoy whatever you post, Kate, so don't stress. We'll all be here:) x

  14. Always fascinating to see what's going on in another part of the world. The fact you are sharing these wonderful summery pictures while we are having limited daylight hours is a reminder that we have had, and will have again, similar moments. Also thinking of your Tasmanian neighbours x

  15. I feel the same Kate. Maybe it's also the time of year - so much happening that blogging seems an extra effort and one more thing to do. Like you I have a littlie starting school and lots generally going on... But then as you say it's all put in perspective by the fires

  16. I know how you feel. Our friends are very lucky. They managed to save their house, but they have no neighbours left:( So sad for such a beautiful part of Australia.
I hope that you are able to find your words soon. Take time for you and pur yourself a lovely iced tea on this hot day and stay safe yourself
(beautiful photos of Miss P as well)

  19. Thinking of you. Please stay safe. Hoping all is well for you and your family, as I read about these awful bush fires. Take specially good care right now. I hope that you are out of the way of the worse conditions. Thinking too about your fellow country men and women and children who are being affected by the extreme temperatures and praying for all of your safety. I'm reading stories of brave people, trying to do their best for their families. Wishing you all fortitude, strength and calmness of mind to deal with this difficult and harsh time.

"All will be well, and all will be well, and all manner of things will be well."

    Stay safe xx

  20. I know just how you feel Kate. To have a home destroyed by fire is my very worst nightmare and when I see those who have lost everything on the news... Well, my heart just breaks for them. And all the ins and outs of daily life that we normally blog about seem so terribly trivial. Australia is a beautiful place but gosh, it can be so brutal... I feel so thankful to have stayed safe and relatively cool this week.
