Dyeing and blogging

IMG_7829It's funny isn't it: the more you blog - the more you blog - the better you blog - the easier you blog - the more the whole thing makes sense.

And then I guess the reverse is true too: the less you blog - the less you blog - the more sticky your words - the fewer photos you take - the less time you can find to post - the less sense the whole blogging thing makes.

At least that's how it works for me. When I'm in it, I love it! And when by accident I take a 10 day break, I can't work out how to get back, or if I even want to.

IMG_7855IMG_7868
For a couple of those 10 days I was just too caught up in the goings on around here to think about it much, and then as the days went on I thought about it but didn't have a second to do it, then I had the chance to do it but wasn't sure I wanted to. And then finally this morning I woke up and missed it.

I missed the creative outlet, and the community and I knew in the future I would miss the record of this time in our lives.

IMG_7812IMG_7859
So I sat down at my computer and had a look around at what some other bloggers were doing. But instead of feeling inspired, I felt outdated. Is there a place for me and my blogger blog anymore? Is there a place for a blog that isn't designed, has nothing to sell, doesn't use the word forage and is typed in the default font?

IMG_7877
I thought about this all morning as I tore up bits of fabric for the girls to tie-dye, I thought about it as we painted melted wax patterns in an attempt at batik, I thought about it while collecting the eggs and feeding the animals, I thought about it while the shearer cut the overgrown alpacas' fleece and while picking Silvan-berries.

I thought about it a lot. My blog has been a big part of my life for the last four and a half years so I guess that makes sense.

IMG_7845 And finally at the very end of the day I sat down and loaded the photos and started to type not really knowing how I was going to resolve this and I was overcome with a sense of happiness and calm. I love my blog. I love blogging. It makes me feel good.

And so I guess that means I'm going to keep going. I'm going to keep sharing photos and telling the stories of our family and our life here on our farm. And I guess it's OK that it's not all designery here because in real life it's not either. And sometimes I worry about that in real life too, but mostly I don't care. It's about love and family and life. It makes sense. To me it does anyway.

So I'll be back, soonish. Same blog typeface - same blog template.
I hope you will too.

Bye!

xx

  2. How very true! I've just had a break of about six months and it was very difficult to actually sit down and write a post to begin again. But, like you, I missed my little bloggy space too. I'm glad you have decided to continue as I love your blog :O)xx

  4. I only recently started reading your blog, but I wanted to thank you and tell you that I found it refreshing, inspiring, and/or comforting depending on what you're doing and where my head's at. So thank you!

  5. The blogs that share the everyday life are the most interesting to me, anyway. I like your blog, and I am glad you are back!

  6. I feel the same way. I've been taking a break over the holidays, hunkering down with the family and wondering what direction my blog should take next year. But your blog is always inspiring. I love the fact it's a simple depiction of life with incredible photos. You do your own thing, and that's what makes you unique. I love your blog! Oh, and I loved your Country Style spread. I just caught up with that this week too! Xx

  8. Don't change your blog Kate...I love it just the way it is. I love your dying also, I wonder what you and your creative girls will do with that pretty fabric?

My blog is very simple also and I have often wondered if it should be more designed with more gadgets (or are they widgets?) and more tricks. But, for now simple works for me and I can manage it myself. Have a lovely weekend x

  9. You are one of my faves Kate for all the reason you feel outdated. If you stopped I'd be really sad so please don't stop, unless you really really want to.

I often think I'd like to start a blog, have a little place to put all my thoughts, make a little community but then I think that really I dont have anything new or interesting to add to the blog world so I don't. Instead I hang out with beautiful people like you & admire all that you do xx

  10. I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOUR BLOG! I think your blog is authentic. It's like you, it's not designer, not trying to flog anything, it's just beautiful words and beautiful pictures, that's why it's So lovely, you don't need all that other fancy pants stuff, your words and images are more than enough! 14. There will always be a place for your blog Kate, it is certainly one of my favourite reads.

  15. I love your blog. I love that I'm not 'sold to' and I love that you are real and all non-designerish. Your blog is one I look to to inspire me to blog! (And besides, tie dye is so very cool these days, again).

  16. I've stopped reading so many blogs of late for all those reasons you mentioned! So many blogs are becoming same/same. But yours has got something really good going on, because it's always the honest truth. Well, that's how it seems to me :)

  17. Kate, I always read here, although I may not have commented before (or rarely at least). Please keep doing what you do! I love your mix of ponderings, inspiration and beautiful (real) photographs. I have three boys of similar ages to your girls. I understand it gets a bit harder (or feels more invasive?) to share as much family stuff as they get older. But I hope blogging can celebrate and share the tween and teen-age family years, and beyond, as much as it has the little-people years. Also, I agree - the more I blog, the more I want to! If I have a break it is harder to get back but if I have just posted I am already composing the next one in my head. Anyway, long-winded comment after imbibing a couple of beers but ... I really hope you keep up this caper!

  18. I love your blog because it's natural and inspiring and about simple living. I don't like the styled look at all; it's not realistic. I hope you keep blogging.

  19. I think your blog is quite simply one of the loveliest there is!

  20. I love your blog Kate. I've been following you for a while now (think i originally found you from a link via Pip or Ruth at Gourmet Girlfriend), and I really enjoy what you write. Your lifestyle is beautiful and your writing is warm and honest. So much so, that you've inspired me to begin my blog...to record, to create and to do something for me. Thank you!

  21. Please don't stop, your blog is inspirational, beautiful, real and fabulous! I read three blogs religiously and yours is my absolute favourite. I always need my Foxs Lane fix!

  23. There is good reason to use the default font (or one of them) - it's easy to read in all browsers. Some of those designy blogs have text that is very hard to read.

I love reading your blog, it is real and it is beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  24. You're so right. I share the same feeling. The more you blog, the more your like it, and the whole thing makes sense. At least it does to me :)

Some say that blogging is dead. But I truly think that as long as you want to keep on, blogging will never be dead.

And I cross my fingers that you blog will stay live for a long long time.

    Have a very nice day.

Ps: The indigo dyeing looks amazing!

  29. I was feeling the same way about some of the other blogs out there. It feels a bit like trying to sell a lifestyle.
I enjoy my visit to the window of your world in blog land. I'm amazed at your engery to get all the crafting done that you do. Your blog inspires me to get more of my crafting done - I have a huge wool stash to get through ;)
Your blog isn't out dated at all and I love your beautiful photos. Keep on going and being your true self. That is why we all love coming to visit here!

  41. Ha! Had to laugh. Yes, agree with all of the above. In January I blog daily - I then organise the entries and publish them in a book. Each year it reignites my love of blogging. Perhaps it could work for you too? The children love the books to look through and remember their summer for years past. Fun times!

  42. I love your blog, Kate. It's the one I always read and enjoy. It feels real and I like that you're not trying to sell me anything. It's just about documenting your experiences and emotions with great photos and words. Please don't stop! xK

  43. Yay! I'm glad you're going to continue! I don't know what blogs you read but yours is in my favorites bar and I check you everyday (I hope that doesn't sound "creeper"). You inspire, encourage, delight and center. Be encouraged too that there are students from across the world who are creating because you do! Thanks from California, USA! :D

  44. I enjoy reading your blog very much and I hope you keep blogging for many years more to come.

  45. Kate, I love your blog, so I'm really happy you're continuing! Also, you completely inspired me to re-teach myself how to knit and to date I have knitted several hats, a beret and a snood and some of them are even wearable!!!!! So thanks for that. Loving your beautiful words and pictures, and the fact that your daughters often seem to wear not-matching hair bobbles, the sane as my daughter! This makes me feel better about bring not very organized!!!!

  46. I've stopped reading blogs that are constantly selling me something or reviewing things I don't want (and not revealing it was a paid for post until the end). I like to read laid back, this is real life blogs - like yours. The dyeing looks fun.

  47. Your blog is definitely my favorite blog! Everything you write is so beautifully written, and your pictures are adorable! I like that it reflects just a normal, yet inspiring, life. I am looking forward to reading more from you!

  52. So happy to read this lovely post from you. So happy to follow your non-commercial blog with it's default font. the important things are the words, not the hours spent choosing a font. The fanciest font won't make up for much. I don't have a trendy blog, I don't have a plan, I spend quite a long time wondering why I blog. But I do, and I love it. So on I will go. Well done for blogging for four and a half years. I'm so glad you're carrying on. Have a good weekend.

  53. I know exactly what you're talking about Kate, but as always you've stumbled upon the right answer for you, just to be yourself (does that make sense?!). It's so easy to imagine others have it all together but I reckon we're all in the same boat and we should just do what we enjoy xx

    ReplyDelete
  54. Oh yes! Your blog is an absolute inspiration. I enjoy reading every post and only hope my words touch readers the way yours do. Thank you for continuing xox

    ReplyDelete
  57. I love what you do here Kate - it's so original and so you. Please don't get caught in the trap! My favourite saying: Comparison is the thief of joy :) Doesn't matter what everyone else is doing - do your own thing, no counting, no comparing. I stopped looking at other blogs for a while because I felt like I couldn't keep up. Then I found my happy place (haha)... I just want to make things. I'll post about them (even though hardly anyone visits my blog anymore) and I'm happy with that. I think you've found your happy place too :) Kx

  58. I'm glad you're keeping on, I love visiting here, being inspired, being able to relate to the everyday non-designery type stuff. We've been watching old home movies and they've made me realise I need to keep my blog going, and to be more committed to recording the incidental everyday things. It's important. Now just to get motivated..

  59. Kate I love your blog, reading about your family adventures! I havent been blogging much over the last 12 mths and find it hard to start again but 2014 is hopefully the year I get to as Isabelle starts high school and Lachlan hopefully gets a job full time after his study. I have been knitting but havent been blogging about it much or taking pics so my ravelry needs to be updated too. Your tie dying looks fab and I love the fabric with the little person on it. Sometimes it is great to just be involved in life's activities and enjoy the moment and just remember that one day you will read back through your blog and remember all those wonderful things you have done. I love looking back at my blog and seeing how small my kids were years ago.

  60. 6 months so I unsubbed from all blogs. But I missed a few, yours included, so I added them back.

Your life is real Kate. And it's up to you how you do or don't portray that! I enjoy reading every word though - always have, always will.

  62. Oh Kate, your blog is one of my favourites for the very things you mentioned. It is honest and cozy and shares beautiful photos and funny snippets of your life. Don't cave under peer-pressure. Remember Dr Seuss - "today you are you, that is truer than true, no one you know is youer than you!"

    ReplyDelete
  63. I found your blog about 9 months ago and have enjoyed your pictures and reading bits about your place on the other side of the world. Your seasons are opposite of mine. I live in Michigan's Upper Pennisula, USA. We are living in a white world of snow and ice now and your pics have me longing for the barefoot summer days. I am also a mother and Your youngest reminds me of a few of my girls. Keep blogging you do a great job!

    ReplyDelete
  64. I will continue to read your posts and when you are busy making LIFE with your family I will await your words return. I love that there is NO advertising and the default font looks fine to me. Keep doing what you are doing--it's among the best.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Love your blog, love your words, love your pictures, love it all. It inspires me every time I read! Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  66. I so hear you, we are in the same camp entirely. Sometimes I fret over the lack of Change at Attic24 too, the sameyness of it all, but truthfully not often. I think if you write from the heart and have a genuine reason for uncommercial blogging (ie to keep a record of family life, creative endeavours, recipes, holidays) then that is simply enough. I would also add "belonging" too, I just love the sense of belonging to the creative blogging community, and I too miss it when I take time out. Keep going Kate, I for one would miss you terribly.
Much love and happiness from me to you]Lucexxx

    ReplyDelete
  67. It would be worth continueing blogging just for that sense of happiness and calm and good...

  68. Your blog is so authentic - who cares about font! I love reading your words and looking at your beautiful pictures, and have lost count of the times I have used an idea from your blog. Thank you.

  69. Kate, you inspire me in so many ways. I love that things you have done have found their way into my life with my 3 darling girls and their Dad. I love that you've made caravaning cool and our van the envy of our friends. Keep going because you're doing a beautiful thing here. Xx

    ReplyDelete
  70. Here's the thing, Kate - your blog is one of my top 3 I always go to when I need inspiration. So if you quit - I'm doomed! :) I think you are lovely without being nauseating, and honest without showing us your dirty laundry. You've got the goods man, keep it coming!! xx

    ReplyDelete
  71. Dear Kate, I do so enjoy your blogging. You as I tried to say earlier, are an inspiration! You have inspired me in many ways ... creating the vegie garden I always planned to do, pickling beetroot freshly picked, and exploring my creativity to find balance and calm! You are so generous to share your life's journey ... Full of love and finding what is right for your family. I wish you happiness .. In blogging or without it. But I am pleased to hear you will continue. Your blog is enjoy by many, and a joy to read of life so real.

  73. I just love your blog Kate. I love how you use the default font and it has a simple format. But all of that doesn't matter if your blog is honest and interesting and inspiring, which yours is. There is no blog post I look more forward to than your. It just resonates with me. Thanks for taking the time to share with us.

  74. Blogger blogs are my very very favourite, the more designer(y) the blog gets, the more same same it looks to everyone else who is getting a swish designed blog. Way back when in the blogging dinosaur days all blogs were a lovely update of a persons everyday life - I think we will see a return to that a bit more in the next year.

    ReplyDelete
  75. You are one of my favourite blogs! I am so glad you decided to continue. I get so fed up with blogs that are just about the 'history' of the item/s they want to sell to me. I hope Claire, above, is right, and that we will see much more of your type of blog, comes back into 'fashion'.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Yours is one of the blogs i definitley look at, i don't even think twice about it. Keep it up, it's real it's life it's inspiring.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Well thank you! How appropriate for me. Just last night, lying in bed while my little babe slept beside me, I was looking at different blog "themes", thinking that mine is pretty simple and basic. I love the artistically designed logos and banners that some blogs have (including yours!); they look so much more personal. However, as a newbie beginner, I just went with what I could figure out - and for this "non-computer person", I am pretty proud of what I have done. But after spending too much time looking at themes and none of them felt any more like "me", I decided that I am happy with what I have for now. It is simple, but simple is what I am striving for in my life. I am pretty darn simple, especially now being a stay-at-home mom. I don't wear make-up, I don't even comb my hair, and I wear my pajamas for most of the day (oh, sorry, I meant to say my "house pants"), so guess my blog shouldn't be all dolled up either.
And you should feel good about your blog, because it is about quality content, which you have a ton of - not rotating side banners with ads for big box stores. I would like to receive some sort of income from my blog, but I also don't want to compromise who I am. It is a dilemma. Go with your gut. And your pictures are wonderful.

    ReplyDelete
  78. real life blogs with gorgeous photos and sincere words are my absolute favorites. :)

    ReplyDelete
  79. I've only just started following you, so please don't go anywhere! Your blog is lovely and inspiring. I've not long started blogging really and I struggle with it constantly. I wonder why anyone would want to read it but then I remind myself that I am only really blogging for myself. I like to look back on what we've done and it helps me to make more sense of my weeks too. It inspires me to get on with things when I might procrastinate and waste my days if I were not making a record of them xx

  80. Thank you for taking the time to share your adventures with us!

  81. There would be a big old hole in the blog world if your gorgeous, inspiring, down to earth blog wasn't there to fill it.

I find myself with the sudden urge to dye things... Love the photos and looks like great fun. xx

  82. Phew ... that's a relief!

  84. Kate - I get it
I have admired your blog for years. Your wonder and joy at the everyday. Your beautiful shots of farm & craft life and family. I've admired how it is earthy and real. And I have admired how you regularly update it with worthwhile, relevant and honest posts.
My blog is parked in the rest area of the blogging highway as I'm find it hard to get back on the horse.
Keep doing what you do Kate - it makes a lot of us smile (and a wee bit jealous as you have this blogging thing sorted!) xx

  85. I don't care who forages for what, just keep doing what you're doing, because quite frankly, your blog is one of my favs, exactly as it is.

  86. "It is better to have a life that feels good on the inside, than one that looks good on the outside " sadly some people never "get" that

  88. Your blog is so lovely... and so is the tie dye!
Sometimes I tire of my own blog, and it's one of those ones that's supposed to support my business. When I think of it that way, it can all seem too much. Blogs like yours are a lovely glimpse into a lovely life, a creative life that I aspire to.
Thanks for sharing. We're all here waiting for you when you feel like talking :)

  89. Kate, like everybody else here, I would read your blog if it was dressed up in a ball gown or dressed down in a paper bag. I read your words, and come back to them and love them because it's you! Honestly and humbly you.

    ReplyDelete
  90. there is a beautiful rawness to be found here... always.. time after time... it's refreshing and honest and open and vulnerable and so many of us relate to things you write in one way or another... even if we don't have a farm or have little ones at home anymore... I love coming to visit, always come away feeling inspired and would miss it terribly if you didn't visit too... same bat time... same bat station... no designery stuff needed... your words and photos are enough... more than enough :-) x

  91. Ah Kate, you scared the bejibberties out of me there for a minute. You are hands-down my favourite blogger. Since I forgot my feedly password I've been tuning in via my favourites links. You are always my first stop. I love your real world. I love Foxs Lane :D

    ReplyDelete
  92. Yep, I feel exactly the same way. Exactly! I'm just a small time blogger, the simple things of life. I don't want to sell anything or glamorize. I just want to be me and enjoy the friendships I've made along the way. Your dye day looks like it was loads of fun. Best wishes, Tammy

  93. Echoing all of the sentiments here about loving loving your blog!

    ReplyDelete
  94. There must be something in the water at the moment, because some of my favourite bloggers are doubting themselves, and ironically they are the good ones that havent gone all comercial, but have stayed real...

    ReplyDelete
  95. Please don't change Kate.. you and your blog are perfect just the way you are!

    ReplyDelete
  96. Simplicity is the word. This blogger blog is you. If you turned it in to something different you would loose your ground. Keep doing what you do. When you want to do it. I have written about 5 blog posts in 2 months... I am stuck like you say... I'm not sure how to get back into it. I should have done it last weekend but got distracted. I should have done it yesterday, tat was the plan, but a coffee invitation to some good girl friends was more interesting. I thought I would do it today but I doubt it will happen. Eventually it will come back to me. I just got to give it time. Good blogs can't be forced. Good blogs are natural. At least I think so and at least that is what I find makes me come back over and over again. So I am with you. And I am so pleased to hear you will continue.

Constructive feed back: I love the way you document and tell a story with your pictures. It is you and Alicia at Posie gets cozy that does this best. Just to pop in and browse your picture story makes me feel like a good friend just told me about her day. Your photography is stunning. You really know how to display a picture, a detail and the pics are always sharp, clear and interesting. Never to much. Never to little. And you're writing is the cream on top. Many blogs might have either the photos or the contents or the writing. You have it all in a package. I'm not sure how you do it or what it is that makes it but you just have that way of talking through words which makes me listen an d read every word. Feel and understand. Come one phrase or a long novel story. And layout... Perfect. I wouldn't have it any other way with flash and cool fonts or accessories... No simple and plain, like real life. Your blog posts do the work on your blog. They are in focus, not some bloppy advert in the side bar... Just to let you know. This is how I feel. And I'll keep coming back to hear your stories, watch your children and farm grow and to get inspired.
    Happy New Year Kate

  100. I like that it's kept simple here. Those fancy designery blogs make me feel out of place. Like I'm visiting some place too fancy! I know what you mean about the blogging part too. I'm in a blogging lull, but I'm not forcing it. With nothing to sell, there is the freedom of coming and going as you like. I haven't been reading many blogs lately at all. They somehow leave me feeling a little inadequate and left behind. But yours is one of the few I do read. Read your Country Style story Kate and loved it. Enjoy your weekend and hope you can stay cool through the heat that we're having right now. Tania x

  101. I love your blog since discovering it a few months ago! I've been mainly focused on stitching blogs up until now but have branched out. I think blogging is a great way to journal your thoughts, projects and goings on since it's nice to look back and remember...oh right! I did this!! I think your colourful photos are wonderful, and what you and your family does is so inspiring to me, although I don't live on a farm (unfortunately), I live in an apartment, I find your blog is a great escape for me to day dream that one day, I may have a place I can grow things and do crafts!!

  103. Dear Kate, I love your blog and the fact that it is authentic and wise and grounded and non commercial. Please don't stop or change anything. Your blog brightens my day (and so many others) and is far better than any designer, commercial, fancy pants blog! thank you for sharing your life and providing inspiration.

Thanks so much for stopping by...

I do read every single comment you leave and appreciate it very much, but I should let you know that I can be a wee bit on the useless side when replying to comments, that's just me, everyday life sometimes gets in the way....so I'll apologise now, just in case.
