My shop.

Hello!

I've had quite a few emails recently asking me about my shop so I thought instead of answering them all individually, I would post what I thought here and then if you have anything to add about your experience you could do so too.

I love to sew! I love making little dresses and tops and skirts and although I have three gorgeous girls to dress, they can only fit so many clothes in their wardrobes. I guess this is what made me think that I needed an outlet for the extras.

After A LOT of thought and agonising and discussion with anyone who would listen to me, I came to the conclusion that my sewing is my 'me time' and that I didn't want to turn it into a business and take the fun out of it.

I had been approached by a few shops but didn't like the idea that the shopkeeper would add at least 100% markup making my clothes quite expensive.

I also thought about markets, but we do so many farmers' markets every month and I didn't want to shlep my family around to more.

So I decided on an online shop.

To be honest I've never bought anything online so I have no experience using any of the different online shops out there. My decision to go with Big Cartel was mainly based on the satisfaction of a few of my friends who use it. I also thought that the people who would buy things from my shop would most likely come from my blog and I liked the fact that it felt less like a shop in an enormous shopping centre and more like a corner store.

And so far I'm happy!

I've been open for just over a month, I've sold some stuff, its easy to add more when I feel like it and it just sits there the rest of the time. There's no pressure to update and its cheap and I don't have to wash anyone's faces or be polite.

I guess I would like it if the item could be marked as 'sold' when it has been sold rather than waiting for me to go in and change it, and I am still really unsure of my prices and often wonder why the things I thought would run out the door don't always.

I have also found working out postage costs a bit mind bending so I've just popped two or three dollars ontop of the price of the item to cover the shipping. So in effect, postage is included in the cost that you see.

I have noticed that when I do shop posts on my blog that things sell better, but I definitely don't want that to be the focus of my blog.

But if you know a little girl who would look gorgeous in The Blue Lady Dress, then you know where you can buy it. I don't know why but I think its the best dress I have ever made. I love the white linen of the table cloth and the embroidered girls and the mismatched sleeves.

So how about you?

Have you visited my shop? Do you like my shop? What do you think of my prices? Do you have your own shop? Do you like it? Do you sell lots? What else?

Oh and I've hijacked Susie's Flower Press blog today too.
You should check it out.
I've held her down and made her answer her own Show and Tell questions.
Looks like she did a great job of it too.

Have a happy Tuesday. XX

  1. oh I LOVE LOVE LOVE this one Kate I think it would be my fave too it's gorgeous!! I think your prices are perfect and if my girls were little I would be buying them. It's a great idea to put on your blog that you have a shop update. Everyone does it and besides even if we weren't to buy them we still love to see them on your blog!! Two birds with one stone. What a horrible saying that is......

  3. It seems like you have it covered Kate.
Im gonna check out Big Cartel now as my thoughts were heading that way lately. I love the corner store vibe youre getting. Etsy is feeling so big!
I dont know much about them and youve almost talked me into switching,

Gorgeous dress, gorgeous model. as always x

  4. Gorgeous Kate! I would buy your dresses too if Isabelle was a lot smaller than she is now. I dont think the white dress would stay white for long with her though as she would be outside jumping on the trampoline, or playing with our dogs. I think your prices are great too. Loved the interview and it is always nice to find out a little bit more about other bloggers that you wouldnt know just by reading their blog!

  5. Hi Kate, gorgeous dress & I think your shop is just lovely.
Prices seem on the mark (if you are happy with them).
As for the sold out it should come up if you have a tick in "Turn on inventory tracking" & no tick in "Allow product overselling"
This is done in Store settings.
Hope this helps & sorry if it doesn't :)
I am pretty happy with bigcartel also!

  6. It's all a huge learning curve isn't it! I've followed just about the same process as you, shop markups too pricey, markets taxing on family, but so far my online store is working just nicely. It did take me a while to work out postage & I'm getting there, though sometimes I'm way off. Your store is gorgeous & I wish you every success! X

  7. Kate the new dress is gorgeous, your shop is gorgeous, and your stuff is worth every penny that it is. Really in my opnion you should charge more- the price has little to do with how quickly things sell in my experience. WHen I put my prices up I sold more - go figure??
I find when I sell stuff I sell lots and then nothing. If that helps, but it took me ages to even sell a few things. SO please don't take anything as a sign.
I wish I could use your shop, but I don't have any little people in my life suitable. NOW if you started making big girls clothes - I would shop nowhere else.
    OOPS Im ranting xo

  13. I love your shop, and my small one is wearing the dress we got from you right now. I love that dress but the chances of anything white staying clean in our house are prett small. I think your prices are great, but think you would sell just as well if you put them up a bit too.

I am glad to hear you are happy with big cartel I have been thinking of switching my little store to them too.

  14. I am considering going back to big cartel too and having a mixxed chunkychooky mybeardedpigeon shop.... maybe.... one day... yours is fabulousness. xx

  15. it is a gorgeous dress, love all the detail, inc the white stitching on the red edging of the sleeves. your prices are really reasonable. that's the hardest part i think!

have been thinking in a back corner of my mind of doing having a big cartel shop + i like the reasons you've talked about. but, i'm addicted to the community on etsy . . .

totally agree about clothing for women :)

  18. I've just opened my Big Cartel shop too, although I've been on Made It for a couple of years.
I think that if you turn on the inventory tracking, then it will automatically know when something is sold.
I find online shopping sooooo much easier than battling crowds at the shops.

  20. There is definitely something about this one isn't there. Stunning! About the shop thing, I have a heap of questions for you too. I chose etsy to sell my bathers. I figured there is only a limited market in Australia and if they are on etsy and I keep postage cost reasonable I can sell to the northern hemisphere in our winter. I am contemplating getting a proper webpage with a shop. I have a friend who designs them but I need to be mnaking some money before I can afford it. THe Markets, what was I thinking. What alot of work. And what are the kids going to do all day. They are going to spend all my profits just keeping them ammused.
Keep up the good work <3 Elisha

I think generally sales have been quiet lately.I love the convenience of online shopping.Self promotion, marketing etc is not my cup of tea and I think it is needed to be known if you are online...
    All the best xx
