Not so random.

I am thrilled to announce that the lovely Michelle has won my cushion cover auction. I couldn't think of many better homes for a granny cushion to go to. Not only is Michelle a fabulous crocheter herself, she also sent me a photo of her very granny lounge room and I think this cushion will fit right in.

After a few attempts at random colour selection that did not work at all, after leaving the whole package of wool and crochet hooks at the beach and having to wait for it to be posted back to me, I am finally on the home stretch.

Michelle, hopefully I will be posting this big fat granny off to you before the week is done.

Thanks to everyone who participated in my auction and to those who cheered it along from the comments section. You guys are so ace!

And just in case you thought it was all lazing about with my feet up and hook in hand at our place. ITS NOT! After playing buses, vets, doggies, babies and squeezing in some laundry and cooking, I have set up a bit of cupcake decorating so I can have a few minutes off to myself.

Now if only they'd stop describing each cake to me in minute detail and asking me if I like it....

Have fun out there. X

ps. Have you ever tried completely random colour selection for anything? Did it work for you? Mine was awful. I think maybe I'm too much of a crafty control freak.

  2. Well done to Michelle and you for donating such a neat prize! How nice that she's so excited about it. It really is a very lovely cushion. I wonder if she will let people sit on it?!

As for colour stuff, I did that with my granny squares and although some did look a little iffy, when they were all together it worked fine. Actually I did the same for my nine square patches too and they look great. Try again and see.

  4. The granny cushion looks fantastic and how wonderful that Michelle won. I love her sunny boy bags for my sock knitting! The girls look like they are having lots of fun decorating cakes. I snuck off yesterday whilst Isabelle baked a cake (with Paul's assistance) and this morning she cooked the last of the pancake mixture in the dutch pancake maker all by herself!

  5. Sarah, I will certainly let people sit on my lovely new chain, just so long as they pouf it up when they get off the sofa!

Kate, I have found, especially with patchwork, that there is random , and planned random. I'm a big fan of having random fabrics but then auditioning them against each other. Same for crochet. I never follow the colour wheel but I do follow the rainbow, as in, if all else fails roygbiv!

Also no hurry Kate! Have a cupcake!

  7. The cushion cover looks lovely-I have tried random on a quilt or two but never have liked the results much. The only exception was a log cabin one where I sorted darks and lights and then randomized after.

Tell the girls that each and everyone of their cupcakes looks gorgeous!! :) I hope you get some peace and quiet.

  8. Your cushion cover looks amazing!
I have tried and succeeded with random colour selection. I was knitting a baby beanie for a friend and was also trying to use up my baby wool stash, so just picked up the next less than half ball, and it worked! I made it all uneven stripey. Wish I'd taken a photo of it...

  10. I totally get what you are saying about the ongoing commentary! My girl was shopping with m yesterday and did nothing but describe EVERYTHING her retinas came in contact with - a little trying after 2 hours!

  12. Congrats Michelle! I totally get your need for controlling your crafty ways, if it doesn't sit right with me I'm not at all happy with the result, and can't see how anyone else would be. My last attempt at random din't work at all...Mmmm those cupcakes, I really need to get into the kitchen!

  13. Congratulations to Michelle she has a real prize there.
I too am a bit of a control freak with colour. I love to see it done by others, but never seem to have the courage to go the whole hog myself.

  14. I wish I could say yes, but I'm afraid I am like you...a crafty control freak! :D

Love your blog by the way. Popped in via the textured leaf and am so glad I did. Your girls cupcakes are making smile from ear to ear.

  15. Maybe you should've asked the girls to help you with random colour selection - they seem to be able to do it for the cupcakes. :-) It looks great anyway without the randomness.

  17. Hi Kate, Random vs. semi-sorted random... With a pile of yarn like mine I have found that pre-sorting and making a selection of complementary colors from which to pick randomly as I stitch works really well. I retain the “surprise” effect while avoiding egregious color combos that jar eyeballs and consciousness

    Lovely cushion. Congrats Michelle.

  18. Tis beautiful dear Kate. Random colourness is usually a bit sucky for me too unless the colours are all from the same general colour.

  19. Wow, I love the idea of cupcake decorating as a distraction/craft activity. I've not done frostings before, can you share a recipe?
