Most times when I finish a new hand knit or something I've sewn, I walk around the house with it, planning how best to capture it in a photo. Mostly I dream about living in one of those houses with white big walls and clean, clear airy, spaces and not so much clutter. You know the houses I'm talking about. One of those houses would have so many perfect backdrops for a photo shoot.But let's face it. I am not one of those domestic goddesses, I live with three little messy, stuff loving people and we live on a farm.
Added to the not perfect house for a backdrop issue, is the fact that my kids are a bit over the posing thing. I generally have to bribe them and chase them around if I don't want a hanger shot.
So this morning I decided I couldn't be precious. If I wanted a couple of shots of Miss Pepper wearing her new Chinatown test knit, then I'd have to let her wear it following her Dad around doing the farm chores.
I had to risk chook poo, wood shavings, mud, dust and dirty water.
This morning I must have been feeling brave, or desperate.
And I think I got some pretty good shots.
Not gorgeous, white walled, focus on the garment shots, but definitely farmer girl wearing her new Mama made jumper in real life.Chinatown jumper details here.

It was worth risking chook poo- the photos are beautiful! If you can say "It'll wash out" or "It'll grow back", it's all good :)

ReplyDeleteI think you'll find that those of us that do have the white walls (on in my case...just the wrong shade of off white) only use them because we don't have a backdrop like yours! Crikey...it's the very bestest setting for the knit. Just PERFECT.

ReplyDeleteI really love the photos of Pepper and Farmer Bren. I think it's so much more meaningful to capture your creations in your space. At least you have a interesting space to work with. Me, I take photos against the wall of the house (white painted brick).
Oh my.... I would take these cute as can be daddy & girl love pix over white walls any day... throw in some baby chicks and I can hardly tear my eyes away.... well done on this knit....loving the colour choice and how well it matches her daddy's farm wear :)

I'ts PERFECT, the pic's, the kid, the farm boy and the jumper. I decided this year that photos are best taken when subject is in its natural environment. NO white walls here either!

i've often dreamed of one of those houses too - the light, bright, airy and uncluttered houses. instead my house is darkish and bursting at the seams with mis-matched furniture, books, yarn, fabric, lego (let's not forget the lego), quilts etc...
ReplyDeletesome days i despair but the other day someone came over, curled up on my couch and said 'this is the sort of house that makes people feel at home. the sort of house that invites people to drink tea and craft and the sort of house that makes me feel instantly comfortable'. So, I figure my house is okay, because that's how I want people to feel. I want them to know that it's okay to spill something, to take their shoes of and relax, to feel at home and to feel welcome.
I imagine your house is very similar :)

ReplyDeleteNow this is what taking photo's is all about...LOVE the pics...So natural and professional...I use to do a lot of kids portriats and a few wedding way back when...and these are just the sought of shots people want...Relaxed friendly and not cheesy...

ReplyDeleteI've just been informed by Ina that she's not going to wear the grey cardi I'm knitting for her. I really should have consulted her on the colour choice before I started - seems four year old girls don't fancy grey, but would prefer pink or yellow or orange. Duh!
