Something funny happened to us this time after we got home from Melbourne. All five of us had at least one intense moment where we felt thrilled to be home. That we love it here. That we are so blessed to call this place ours.
Miss Indi told me yesterday that she also felt like she had changed. That she felt different since coming home. I wondered if she felt more her. Comfortable.
As much as we pride ourselves in being cool farmers that can straddle the country/city divide, we really are the happiest here in the forest. At home.
I've felt it big time since we've been back. That I am the happiest, the most me, when I am hanging out with my gang, with dirt under my finger-nails, wearing my farm clothes, doing the farmer-girl thing.
I feel happiest when I am making- knitting and sewing and crocheting;

I feel happiest cooking and baking gorgeous meals and snacks using our own and local produce on Mona the Esse.
Farmer Bren's spelt and rye bread with my plum jam and quince jelly.
Although the ground is icy cold, I love pottering in the kitchen garden. Planting and weeding and transplanting and harvesting.
And although it is dirty and a lot of work, I love that we heat our home and cook our food on wood that we have grown on our land. It is sustainable and it feels right.
And I love and feel proud of what we do here at Daylesford Organics. I love that we produce clean, delicious, ethical and sustainable food. I love doing the farm chores all together and I am so happy with the decisions we have made that allow our children to grow up here.
I feel happy. I feel that although the decisions we have made haven't always been the easiest, that they have been the best for us. And that after eleven years here, I can say that we are country peeps. We like to visit the big smoke but we feel our best out here on our farm.

Beautiful post Kate. Every time I read posts of yours like this I find myself yearning for a country life; a slower, simpler, more sustainable existence... but I think it's destined to remain a fantasy, at least for the moment.

Your photos are beautiful and illustrate your post perfectly. As much as I would love to be a farm family being self-sustaining and all, I can't, not right now anyway. I often remind myself that if I can't be in the home I love, love the home I live in. Life is so much better when we choose to live our days happily. ReplyDeleteGrowing up on a farm in NSW, the best thing about coming home from visiting relatives in the big smoke was a glass of fresh rainwater from the tank. We all loved it!

Kate I think you and your family make great country peeps, and you can always tell how much you love it there by reading your posts, even when your sad or frustrated. I think your living a dream that quite a few people would only dream about. Loving the red beanie too, it looks so cosy and warm. I need to knit some more for Paul as he is working on a new house outside of Woodend and they dont have any heating so he is freezing!

ReplyDeleteSpent last weekend in Melbourne, loved it, had a ball, soaked up the sights and had wonderful breakfasts
in Fitzroy, sat in the car and crocheted as hubby and son drove around......lucky me.
Best bit was coming home to the country where strangers look you in the eye and say 'hello as you walk down the street'......
Am happy that I have raised a son who isn't into the latest and greatest and brands (except when it comes to his guitars!)
That he loves the country as much as I do and is happiest and most comfortable in his surrounds, appreciating, the beauty of sunrises, frosty mornings, wild birdlife and he's not too busy to notice it all.
Enjoy your country life with your family, it is the great Aussie dream come true.....love the song too, got it stuck in my head now, hehe,,,,,,

ReplyDeleteIt's funny that I feel completely opposite to you Kate and yet the same. We did the country move and it didn't work out for us, Sydney town is where I will always find peace. Early morning sun rising over the sparkling harbour, friends greeting us at cafes and parks. We lead a very urban life and enjoy the opportunities it bring us and our children.
