Sunny days

Yesterday morning, far too early, we pulled our girls out of their cozy beds, dressed them in their day clothes, put them in the car and dragging a trailer filled with produce we drove all the way to Melbourne. For most of the drive it was dark, we watched the other cars and wondered where they were going and we watched as the sky slowly lightened, filled with streaky sunrise magnificence and then Saturday settled in and made itself comfortable for the day.

After a while we arrived at the Children's farm. We set up our stall, we gossiped with our farmer neighbours, we sold our produce, we bought lots of other people's produce, we chatted with our gorgeous customers, we packed up and then we drove all the way home.

An hour and a half there, five and a half hours at market and then an hour and a half home.

Home. Exhausted. All of us. Hurty tired.

We sat around for a while watching a movie and eating market olives, cheese and bread.

And then it was time to do the evening chores. All I wanted was to sit on my bum, but the taps and pumps and filters and tomatoes called. So we put on our boots and wandered down the hill.

We wandered slowly at first, dragging our feet. And then faster and faster as our bodies filled with fresh farm air, our eyes took in the beauty of where we live and our hearts felt grateful. From barely being able to walk at first, we soon found ourselves dancing, and singing and laughing like the kookaburras.

And playing in the sunflowers. And smiling. It's hard not to smile amidst such golden gorgeousness. Impossible probably.

I wont lie to you, there have been tired tears today and a bit of lying on the ground unable to move. Farming and mothering and marketing and gardening and housing in autumn feels a bit overwhelming sometimes. But when your days are filled with sunflowers and tomatoes and beans and grapes, it's hard to stay down or still for long.

Our new week kicks off tomorrow with a day off school and finishes next weekend with my parents moving here. I'm so excited. Things are about to get awesome.

I hope your new week is awesome too. And sunshiney and delicious.
Got anything exciting planned?

See ya sunflower x

  6. How wonderful that your parents are finally moving so close by. You must be so excited! I have to say I love that sunflower face photo Kate. I dont think the heat we have been having is helping you much either with all your farm duties.

  7. Enjoy that day off school Kate, I agree impossible not to smile around so much goodness!

  8. So exciting that your parents are moving, I would love that! My parents just spent the day with us, and it's so sad when they head home.

  9. My parents moved near me a couple of years ago and it was just the best thing ever! Your day, even though tiring, looked so happy and colourful. Those sunflowers! Just wonderful! Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Chel x

  10. I have wonderful, though vague, memories of going in the car with my parents when they were doing market stalls. They used to bake cakes and have a coffee stall (before coffee carts and such, my dad used to take a camping gas stove and all the ceramic cups and plates from our kitchen and real coffee pots and such). They would spend days beforehand baking.
We'd have to wake up before dark, and would sleep in nests of blankets in the car while we drove there. But what a day - being market people.
Now I do it with my little ones, at crafting markets. And despite the long long day, they love it too.

I only wish we had a sunflower grove to smile at us when we came home from a long market day. On my to-do list for next Summer!!!

Happy week to you Kate. And yah to your parents moving. That's going to be so good.

  17. I love your blog. Your girls seem to be living a genuine 'Little house on the Prairie' life (Wrong country I know). Does that seem like a cliche? Well, the life you are giving your family and how you report it on your blog doesn't seem like it. You are giving them freedom (to be themselves, and to roam as well, so yes psychologically and physically), and knowledge about the world we life in. Priceless. Your sunflowers are wonderful!

  21. Hi Kate - I remember one of the first posts I ever read on your blog was explaining how your parents hoped to move and sell their home (if memory serves from Tasmania to across the road?). I remember thinking that your parents must love you and your family if they are willing to make the move so congratulations!

  22. Sunflowers are my absolute favourite! Thank you for brightening up my day with this little snapshot of your farm.
