blogging bits & burning sticks

IMG_8815 IMG_8834 IMG_8830 IMG_8835
I'm afraid my blogging has been getting away from me. Where my monthly average used to be 13 or 14 posts, these days it is down to four or five. I don't know what's changed. Maybe I have less time these days, maybe facebook and instagram are to blame, maybe it's because I feel like I've said it all before, maybe it's because I just got out of the habit, or maybe it's because each post seems so big and overwhelming that often it's simpler to let it go.

But I miss it. I miss taking the photos and telling the story. I miss watching the post come together. I miss that feeling of satisfaction I get when I press publish. And I miss your beautiful words and stories in the comment section. And someday in the future I know that I will desperately miss the gaps in our family's illustrated history.

The other day Miss Jazzy sat down to do a timeline of her life and there the last five years were, every birthday party, every major event and so much in-between. She had a ball scrolling through remembering her life.

I've been thinking about ways to make blogging easier for myself ever since.

And I've come to the conclusion that I need to make it simpler and quicker for myself. So for the next little while I am going to aim to publish a blog post every, or every second day. Quick little stories with only a couple of pictures that tell the tales of where we are and what we are doing right now.

I've said it before and I know it to be true; the more I blog - the easier and better I blog.

Look out for stories in the coming days about what I've been knitting, what's growing in the garden, what we are doing with all those tomatoes, what we are reading, how I'm going with the whole kind thing, what's bringing me joy and anything else that pops into my head. Feel free to offer me any suggestions you might have too.

Yay! I'm excited.

IMG_8844 IMG_8848 IMG_8843 This particular story above is one that began yesterday morning when I bumped into a friend who was taking her family away camping for the holidays, and left me feeling guilty that all our plans are for home. But then when I came home to our little farm and had a good look around I realised that our home, and all the adventures it holds, is a pretty incredible place to holiday in too.

And once I'd realised how much we all really need a holiday at home, we set about collecting sticks and building a bonfire where we spent the day cooking and pottering and playing and experimenting and getting absolutely filthy.

I love that despite the cold and rain, I found Jazzy and Pepper back out there in their wet weather gear first thing this morning wanting to keep going where they left off. I can remember doing that so clearly when I was little. The sign of a great day I think.

I'm going to sign off now and go and stir my bubbling pots of tomato sauce and quince jelly, but I'll be seeing you real soon.

Big love and happy holidays!

xx

  1. Yay! I'm excited too. I love your posts and pictures, so I'm happy you'll be posting every couple of days. It's the small things that make up the big pictures. At the moment we're camping and crafting; next week we'll be holidaying at home. Xx

  3. Your posts are always welcome on my computer Kate...no matter how many! A holiday at home is such a good idea. I am smiling at your words about the girls picking up where they left off the previous day, I remember doing that too. Enjoy the quince jelly x

  4. I should aim to do one every couple of days but photos of me packing envelopes cutting fabric and playing with Romi would probably get a bit boring! Xxx

  5. I am looking forward to your blog posts. I agree that it's an excellent way to record the day to day happenings in your life. It is lovely to look back on and it will always be there for your children and generations to come. I love seeing what other people are making, creating, growing and a peek into their day. It inspires me. As for holidays.....my hubby had time off in January and we stayed home. It was a relaxing break and there was no packing and unpacking. We all loved it. Enjoy! xxoo

  6. Yay! I'm excited too! You've inspired me too, it's very true, sometimes you just have to get in and blog. Loving the girls 'fishing' in the fire. Brings back wonderful memories x

  9. Don't stress about blogging ... I got all worked up earlier this year about not blogging as much as "I should" but then I realised that there are No Rules! Now I blog when I have something to say, something to show or something I want to record for posterity. People who love your blog will still visit, still read and still love what you have to say - even more because it's real and from the heart! Sending love, light and blessings. x

  10. Those photos are stunning, the light, the activity and the girls clothes....yep...it's camping with all the luxuries of home. Last Sept we couldn't go camping so we set the tent up in the back yard and slept out there, the kids had a ball and my sister in law giggled and chatted until late and we had fun too. 11. I for one have missed popping in here a few times a week so am thrilled with this fab news of more posts... It is hard to find/make the time to blog sometimes... it usually takes me ages to do a post but I recently did a heap of little ones that were like a postcard from our roadtrip around New Zealand. I limited myself to just one photo (which was really really hard for me!) and a small paragraph (like what you could fit on a postcard) for each post. This made it really easy to do from my phone and super speedy. At the same time I was able to capture little bits and pieces our trip to help me remember some of those random details that are easily forgotten.

A morning campfire smouldering reminds me of camping holidays... how cool that you have that at home! x

  12. You don't even have to write a post - often your photos tell the story for you. Please don't disappear though.

  17. Yay!! I have missed your posts (and it seems many of the blogs I read seem quiet lately...?) and photos, even just a quick hello !! I admire your ability to blog and share, and hope you find some mojo soon.
and so it seems Autumn is upon us (here in Sydney-town anyway!), I look forward to some woolly and warm posts of family, food, fires and knits!

  18. Your girl's outfits - always love them! And they wear such frilly skirts and adorable tights while doing messy things too! Guess that's the sign of a real woman. Your farm looks like a holiday site itself. Though I know taking a holiday at home means having to ignore all of the work that needs done.

  19. Last year I found an American blogger that had a blog every day in May challenge. She had a prompt every day and they were really great. I didn't manage to do every day but I did really enjoy having a prompt to get me writing. It's worth looking for something similar.

  20. Holidays at home are the best. Our little ones are a bit tired and really need some home time so we're embracing the home holiday too. So far it's been so peaceful and nice. Enjoy your Autumn break xx

  21. Camping at home is just as fun...plus you can have a real shower and use a real loo. Holidays haven't kicked off here just yet..but when they do, I think a bonfire is a must. Thanks for always inspiring me - your blog is great so don't put too much pressure on yourself x

  22. I so know what you mean Kate - the more regularly I blog the better, and easier, it is. Since moving a few months ago now from our old home I haven't blogged nearly as much as usual, it just seems all a bit 'meh', overwhelming, and I'm trying to find my blogging feet again when so much of what I blogged before was about our home and little homebody things. I know it will come in good time, as I start to do those same things just in a new/old home. Looking forward to your little stories, I do love them xxx
P.S. We're holidaying at home this Easter too, as we always did when I was a little girl, we just go down the creek with some sausages and marshmallows, sit around a fire, wander home whenever we please. Now my nieces want to do just the same, too easy.

  23. I will happily read through post after post of you making delicious tomato sauce or crocheting granny squares - it's never redundant when it's beautiful, Flick x

Thanks so much for stopping by...

I do read every single comment you leave and appreciate it very much, but I should let you know that I can be a wee bit on the useless side when replying to comments, that's just me, everyday life sometimes gets in the way....so I'll apologise now, just in case.
