What makes your heart sing??
And then this amazing thing happened.
One beautiful February evening, I interrupted our family dinner and asked everyone to grab something from the house that they LOVED doing, something that made them happy, and then we filed out the door. One by one I checked to make sure no-one had food in their teeth, everyone was dressed appropriately and then we headed to the steps of our cubby-house.
It was a gorgeous evening and we were happy just to hang out together doing what we love to do.
And then I made some comment about a ridiculously enormous fart, everyone cracked up laughing, I snapped my shot, I started laughing and fell back into the herb garden and got a wet bum, the girls laughed some more, I kept snapping, and then we hung out until it slowly got dark and cold and we went inside to clear away dinner.
A few weeks later I was standing in our local newsagent first thing on a Monday morning hassling them to undo the piles and piles of new magazines that had just been delivered - because one of the photos that I took that evening was on the cover of the Autumn issue of Slow Living Magazine!!!!! My family are on the cover of a magazine!!!
I've had a copy of that magazine sitting on my desk for about a month now and I still get a happy surprise every single time I walk past it. I still can't really believe it.
There are certain things that I have gotten used to over the five or so years that I have been a blogger - a lot of people know a lot about my life, some people respect my opinion, I can take good blog photos and write good blog text, I've taken photos and written articles for some other publications, I've even written a book!!!! But never in my wildest dreams did I think I would take a cover photo.
I'm thrilled.
I also wrote an article and took some pictures for the inside of the magazine. All about farmer Bren's spoon carving and how it's changed his life.
You can get all the information you need about Slow Living magazine here - http://www.slowmagazine.com.au.
And if you do have your very own copy and would like to win a subscription - take a photo of the cover in your home/in your garden/with some of your favourite creative things, upload it to instagram, hashtag it #slowlivingmag and Slow Magazine will choose their five favourite images and reward them with a subscription each. Cool huh!! Better get snapping.
And until next time - why don't we all do a bit more of what makes our hearts sing!!
Love ya's!!
xx

I do read every single comment you leave and appreciate it very much, but I should let you know that I can be a wee bit on the useless side when replying to comments, that's just me, everyday life sometimes gets in the way....so I'll apologise now, just in case.

I got such a trill when it arrived in my mailbox & there were your peeps! Even though I don't "know" you all I still said to my husband "Hey! That's my friend Kate's family!". Just gorgeous Kate :)
ReplyDeleteI am trying to do more things that make my heart sing, things that are purely for joy & for me only. As a mama & wife it's VERY easy to get caught up ion doing all the things that others need or want from you. I enjoy doing those things too ( except the cleaning, man I hate the cleaning) but I'm trying to be a little selfish & carve some time that's just for doing the things I love. Those thngs are important too yeah?
xx
I call you my friend Reannon too. I think it's kinda cool.
DeleteAnd you're right, it's sosososo important to carve out some time for stuff we love too. xxx
To me...your photo just explodes with joy. Joy in simple things and in being together!

ReplyDeleteI've only bought the magazine a couple of times but as soon as I recognised your family I had to buy it. That photo is just beautiful - I guess it's the light and shadows and the contrasting green and red in the iron. Oh and of course the people. Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteThat's fantastic Kate....I wish the girls were all wearing some of your gorgeous socks as well....you all look like such a beautiful happy family. best wishes.
ReplyDeleteHow exciting! I loved reading the sweet story about the cover photo. Such a beautiful pic of your family. I am starting to do more things that make my heart sing. It is a slow process to fit it in amongst family life and our 3 children but I am making progress. I have recently sewn cushion covers for our lounge room, I am 3/4 of the way through crocheting a wool blanket for our QS bed (using Bendigo Woollen Mills yarn), I have started doing English paper piecing and in the near future I am planning on getting our vegie garden growing, plus some fruit trees. It fills my heart with joy. Oh, and I enjoy reading your blog posts they help me to slow down and breath in nature. Thank you Kate
ReplyDeleteKate I was in a different newsagents the other day and I had already seen this gorgeous picture in lots of different places, but standing there in a this tiny newsagent, I catch a glimpse of Slow Mag and I have to pull it out and take another peak. Just seeing the cover made my heart sing. It's such a gorgeous family photo lovely, it really is. xx
ReplyDeleteHow uplifting, to take a picture of happiness - you would wonder how that is possible but your picture shows and makes me feel just that - happy. Jo x
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on such gorgeous photos of pure happiness.
ReplyDeleteMy moment of pure happiness was today in the rain seeing the Autumn leaves at a nursery and the surrounding hills ...at Crafers in the Adelaide Hills.
I got soggy and wet but I still can savour the colour and textures. A pretty awesome day!
