love + sunflowers

Hello my sunshiny friends,

I hope you're doing well.

I posted all of these photos onto my blog last Friday before it overheated and I had to turn it off and walk away.

Today I am writing to you while my my computer sings a haunting gravelly crunchy sounding tune as back-up to my typing. I'm trying to ignore it and quickly get my thoughts tapped out, but I fear that at any moment there'll be a puff of smoke, a spark, and then everything will disappear into a cloud of smoke.

It feels ironic that as soon as I weighed the pros and cons and decided to continue blogging this year, real life in the form of technology got in the way and made it impossible.

I have so much to tell you; Indi ticked another rite of passage off her list and got her driver's license, then she had a farewell party, packed her bags and flew off to the other side of the globe and we four came home from the airport overwhelmed with the thought of trying to find our rhythm without her. A few days later Jazzy and Pepper picked bunches of flowers for their teachers and went off to start their new school years - Jazzy in year 10 and Pepper in year 6. The flowers are at that exciting stage where there's something new to see every time you walk down the garden rows, and there's finally enough produce to pick to fill our baskets and our tummies. Today we ate cheese, sliced tomato and cucumber on crackers and it finally felt like summer...yum!

And I've been reading a lot (just finished The Clever Guts Diet by Michael Mosley), listening to podcasts, trying to find a show to watch after finishing Shtisel (which we LOVED!), I haven't spun or knitted for weeks but I have watered and weeded and picked and planted, and I've spent a lot of time thinking about this year and what I want it to look like.

Ahhhhhh just as I had a few moments of quiet from the computer and contemplated writing a proper blog post after all, it started up with its loud crunchy noise reminding me of who really is the boss.

So I'm going to say goodbye for now. Hopefully, if all goes to plan, we'll get this problem fixed up early next week and I'll be back to regular programming by next Friday. Fingers crossed.

Until then, I'd love to hear about you.
Have you got exciting plans for this year?
Are you obsessed with gut health?
Can you feel my panic about my computer from there? Ahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

Sending lots of love and sunflowers,

Kate xx

  1. Hi Kate, just wondering whether your sunflowers are used for anything other than to look spectacularly pretty in the garden? We've grown some sunflowers for the first time this year, but not sure whether they're multipurpose or not... Gosh they're pretty to look at though :)

    1. Hi Dianne, other than looking fabulous, we dry the seeds in the middle of the flowers to use as chook food or to oven dry with a little salt and eat ourselves. There may be other uses but that's all we've ever come up with. x

  2. I love sunflowers. So much happiness in them.
I can feel your fear about the computer saying no! Hope it soon gets sorted and you can focus on more pretty things.
I love the pictures with your house in the background and the flowers in the foreground.

I can't imagine what it must be like to see your baby heading off overseas, mine are 4 hours away and that seems like forever. I often wonder what it must have been like for our parents when we flew the coop, contact was so much slower and more expensive than now. Will Indi be travelling or staying in one place? How are the girls settling into life with her gone?

With so many fires in our state I've been constantly refreshing the fire map and the weather app, even though they are very far away from me. Fire terrifies me.

My baby has her test on Tuesday for her licence, and while for her I hope she passes, for me it will be bittersweet. There will be no-one left who has to rely on me, I will no longer be able to use "mum's taxi" as an excuse to get out of something I don't want to do nor will I have to consider anyone else's timetable when making plans for myself. That is scarily exciting, and also kind of sad. I'm not quite ready for this next stage of life, but it's totally out of my control and will happen with or without me.
Have a wonderful week full of many bunches of happy sunny flowers.
    cheers Kate

    1. Hi Kate, it is so much easier for us these days. When we traveled after school my Dad wrote us an aerogram letter each week, my mum sent us the occasiona parcel of goodies and sometimes other family members wrote letters. Oh and then there were the occasional expensive reverse changes calls. Since she left on Monday I've texted with Indi often and she's sent me loads of photos. She also just messaged me to tell me she loved my blog. So lovely. I think missing her hits us all at different times throughout the day. It is weird without her.
The fire thing is terrifying. I can't even imagine how scary it must be there right now.
And your baby getting her license is huge. Thinking of you.
I hope you have such a lovely weekend too. xx

  5. Hi Kate. I have been thinking about you this last week or so and wondering how you are feeling. Indi will have wonderful adventures but how hard it is to let our children go! My daughter lives in Melbourne and although I am glad she is happy, it is hard at times. Sending lots of smiles and love to you from.England x x x

    1. Thank you Kath. I'm actually coping better than I thought I would be at the moment, although things can change at any time...I think it helps that she's such a great texter and that she's so happy. I don't know how I'd be if I had no idea where or how she is. I hope you have a lovely weekend. xx

  6. Polar vortex here in Michigan. We've been trapped inside for days. Windchill -34 F the other night. I've lived in Michigan most of my 51 years and have never felt this kind of cold. Never seen everything shut down like this. Nice, though, because I got a few days off work and I'm scrubbing the house clean. It's so hard to imagine it's summer somewhere! You have a beautiful family and farm. Hope you have a wonderful day.

  7. Hi Kate, my 3 year old granddaughter grew sunflowers this year and we have just picked them to save them from the heat in Melbourne today. We took her to the zoo yesterday and she told us she had a happy day at the end of it. That's what it's all about. We are going to the Qwere festival in Montmorency tonight and we're looking forward to some great food and music. My aim this year, after many years of chronic ill health, is to do everything. Do all the things. Cheers Judy

  8. Oh Kate, after reading about your computer problems I started to READ faster in case it all went kerfutt! How silly of me! Do hope it all gets fixed soon - so enjoy your posts. Life will be very different for you without Indi there. Hope Pepper and Jazzy have settle back into school well. I’m at the other end of the scale and settling my Mum into residential care - week one has gone well. Fingers crossed for them all. Hugs Meredithe x

I am very happy that there is new technology in the phones and only because when one of my children is traveling, almost every day tells me something, the fact of being able to connect so easily gives a lot of peace of mind. I am happy that this happy Indi, will be an enriching experience for her and for you as parents.
You have made your home a place with a lot of beauty. I hope that the problem of the computer is resolved satisfactorily and on Friday we meet again. The only purpose I have made this year has been: not to buy material from fabrics or wool balls until I finish what I have stored ...
That you enjoy many happy moments.

  10. I can feel your panic from here (south coast of England) and also mine because I love reading your blog and seeing your changing seasons, so different from where I am. You remind me of how vast and wonderful the world is. I have an exciting plan for this year: to finally apply to an occupational therapy course after thinking and procrastinating on it for many years. I look forward to reading all about your plans each week.

  11. Hi Kate,
After finishing our lap of Australia, I am struggling to find a routine. Due to my rheumatoid arthritis I have not been able to return to ‘work’. Leaky gut has been linked to autoimmune disease and I need to learn more too. I fear having to give up cheese, which is my favourite food...
    Wishing you a lovely week.

  12. My goodness Pepper seems to have blossomed and shot up in what seems like a very short time.

We grew sunflowers this year, some were taller than me with MASSIVE heads, and they looked divine. So divine they tempted some local cockatoos and they were decimated within 3 days. Oh well.

This year I am just going to continue painting as it keeps me (some might disagree) sane.
