Hooray 4 home!!

Something funny happened to us this time after we got home from Melbourne. All five of us had at least one intense moment where we felt thrilled to be home. That we love it here. That we are so blessed to call this place ours.

Miss Indi told me yesterday that she also felt like she had changed. That she felt different since coming home. I wondered if she felt more her. Comfortable.

As much as we pride ourselves in being cool farmers that can straddle the country/city divide, we really are the happiest here in the forest. At home.

I've felt it big time since we've been back. That I am the happiest, the most me, when I am hanging out with my gang, with dirt under my finger-nails, wearing my farm clothes, doing the farmer-girl thing.

I feel happiest when I am making- knitting and sewing and crocheting;
The red To Melbourne & back beanie above (details here) and the start of my Graphite Mara.

I feel happiest cooking and baking gorgeous meals and snacks using our own and local produce on Mona the Esse.

Farmer Bren's spelt and rye bread with my plum jam and quince jelly.

Although the ground is icy cold, I love pottering in the kitchen garden. Planting and weeding and transplanting and harvesting.

And although it is dirty and a lot of work, I love that we heat our home and cook our food on wood that we have grown on our land. It is sustainable and it feels right.

And I love and feel proud of what we do here at Daylesford Organics. I love that we produce clean, delicious, ethical and sustainable food. I love doing the farm chores all together and I am so happy with the decisions we have made that allow our children to grow up here.

I feel happy. I feel that although the decisions we have made haven't always been the easiest, that they have been the best for us. And that after eleven years here, I can say that we are country peeps. We like to visit the big smoke but we feel our best out here on our farm.

I've had this song in my head for the past few days...

I hope you are having a happy weekend.
I hope you feel great where ever you call home.

  1. Beautiful post Kate. Every time I read posts of yours like this I find myself yearning for a country life; a slower, simpler, more sustainable existence... but I think it's destined to remain a fantasy, at least for the moment.

Thanks so much for sharing your lovely and thought provoking experiences.

  2. Lovely lovely photos and post. It looks so beautiful where you are. I wish my little kitchen garden looked like yours. x

  3. Home is where the heart it.

    It's that simple.

Thank you for such a beautiful post.

  4. Hooray 4 you Kate. A beautiful post, so great to read you are feeling so content with your life.

    cheers Kate

  5. Hi thoughts were the same as Michelles above. It is lovely when home is the most comfortable place on the planet to be. I love your kitchen gardens too.

  6. Great post Kate! I love how you express yourself so well too - it's lovely to feel this way. cheers Wendy

  7. lovely to hear from you!
as i was reading this i was wondering if i will feel the same when we return home. i hope so! but right now i feel terrified at the thought - the same chores, routines, habits, failings...
i hope it comes before it's time to go back. i'm grateful that we still aren't halfway and on the countdown yet... have a beautiful weekend x

  8. Your photos are beautiful and illustrate your post perfectly. As much as I would love to be a farm family being self-sustaining and all, I can't, not right now anyway. I often remind myself that if I can't be in the home I love, love the home I live in. Life is so much better when we choose to live our days happily. I love that you share your farm and creations Kate with the world so that I can see what it would be like if I were to be on a farm too. You grasp your intent so well in words that you are a joy to read. xx

  9. this is a beautiful life kate. i love that you live off what you grow in so many ways. a real inspiration. i am so completely envious of your esse :) and your photos make me want to live in the country. have a happy weekend. xo

  10. Growing up on a farm in NSW, the best thing about coming home from visiting relatives in the big smoke was a glass of fresh rainwater from the tank. We all loved it!
Love your pics and the lifestyle. I can't seem to convince my city boy that the move would be good. I'll keep working on him...

  11. It is a wonderful thing to know who you are, what you are, what you stand for. To know and have peace and contentment. You are indeed fortunate. Enjoy!!
    Anne xx

  12. gets in your head hey (the song) and home...well the heart of course. Love that you all had your moments of aaaaaaaah this is my soft place to fall.
This version of Home never fails to make be choke up a little - the earnest little one singing her heart out with her Dad. bless x

  13. I think if I lived on your farm I wouldn't want to spend too much time in the city've got everything you need in beautiful surroundings...and of course each other!

    Have a lovely week Kate.
    Fleur xx

  14. Kate I think you and your family make great country peeps, and you can always tell how much you love it there by reading your posts, even when your sad or frustrated. I think your living a dream that quite a few people would only dream about. Loving the red beanie too, it looks so cosy and warm. I need to knit some more for Paul as he is working on a new house outside of Woodend and they dont have any heating so he is freezing!

  15. I think you're living the life many of those city folk dream of at night, Kate. x

  16. Love the last photo..says it ll really. See you soon, back in the hood xo

  17. Hey Kate, am so with you on all your thoughts.
Spent last weekend in Melbourne, loved it, had a ball, soaked up the sights and had wonderful breakfasts
in Fitzroy, sat in the car and crocheted as hubby and son drove around......lucky me.
Best bit was coming home to the country where strangers look you in the eye and say 'hello as you walk down the street'......
Am happy that I have raised a son who isn't into the latest and greatest and brands (except when it comes to his guitars!)
That he loves the country as much as I do and is happiest and most comfortable in his surrounds, appreciating, the beauty of sunrises, frosty mornings, wild birdlife and he's not too busy to notice it all.

Enjoy your country life with your family, it is the great Aussie dream come the song too, got it stuck in my head now, hehe,,,,,,

    Claire x

  18. Hi,

Have you posted the recipe for spelt and rye bread before ... looks the most delicious ever and as a fellow jam maker I can almost taste the jam and jelly ..yum!

    1. I haven't yet Anne.
But I have had a few requests since I posted these photos so I think I might get the recipe off him and blog it soon.

  19. *sigh* love, love, love this post Kate.

  20. What a lovely post. Awesome to know where you belong. I started to reply about having finally realised that I too am where I belong, but it started to get so long, I'm going to finish it and put it in my blog. I'll come back and leave a link when I'm done :)

  21. we just got home from melbourne....and we feel much the same. just waiting now for our house to warm up again. how beautiful are the frosty mornings!!! x

  22. that bread looks awesome. waiting for my sourdough starter culture to be ready and hope my bread turns out as good.
we recently did a trip to the city, was fun but oh my the sense of space and peacefulness upon returning home was something to treasure.

  23. City trips are important - they always help me to look at everything with fresh eyes when I return home. Having the contrast helps me not to take everything for granted! x

  24. we have been feeling the come down after our melbourne sojourn....have we made the right decisions, is this the best place for our children, is there something more we should be doing, is this enough, gee that house in melbourne was way warmer than ours...we know in our heart of hearts it is but sometimes that head gets all in the our family did our happy dance this morning to shake the blues none other than your same edward sharpe happiest song on the planet...hows that for some kind of wonderful...

  25. I finally got around to publishing the post I wrote that started as a comment here... it's at Now I'm going to go listen to that song (couldn't do it when I read the post before, 'cause I was reading on the phone while nursing my sleeping toddler).

  26. It's funny that I feel completely opposite to you Kate and yet the same. We did the country move and it didn't work out for us, Sydney town is where I will always find peace. Early morning sun rising over the sparkling harbour, friends greeting us at cafes and parks. We lead a very urban life and enjoy the opportunities it bring us and our children.

I guess I just want to give a different perspective because not all us city folk go to bed at night wishing for silence. Creeps me out actually ;) we garden, go to galleries and have so many amazing adventures with our little ones and I wouldn't swap it for the world.

Home is what you make it not necessarily where it is don't you think?

Lovely post, you write so beautifully about the life you love.
