In my creative space this week I am trying to remember the fine art of lino cutting and printing.
When Indi's class were lino cutting in art class late last year, I made a note to try it again before too long myself. The other day I asked the art teacher to borrow the tools and a few scraps of lino and here we are.I haven't been near the tools or the lino since I was at school, but the smell of the stuff and the feel of the cutter gliding through the lino take me right back there.
The plan is to jazz up some of the bed linens that I have been sewing with that have seen better days. While I have some bright colourful sheets, many of the sheets I have been finding in op shops are faded and worn and need a bit of a new life.
Its very early days still and I am in desperate need of a roller to apply the paint and a way to hold the lino so it doesn't smudge as it prints, but I am a bit excited at the possibilities.
Pepper is creating her own master pieces next to me.
Of course, I have been crocheting a trim or two along the way too.

You've been busy!! Lovely looking stuff. (do you have a simple granny square pattern - I'm learning :) Love the smock - must make some of those myself (and some kids cooking aprons too)

I don't think I could ever muster up the courage to sue a lino cutter...bad experience in high school!

i love stamp carving too!!! but i never use lino, i always use rubber... lino seems tooooo "hard", but i bet they r much more durable then rubber.. love ur print!

ReplyDeleteOooh I haven't carved lino since high school, what a memory! I'm sure you can glue a wooden 'handle' onto the back of the lino to hold it still whilst you stamp, any small scrap block of wood and some pva should do it!

ReplyDeletehey there...am into lino print myself. I do not have a proper roller to apply the color onto the lino block. what I did was using my brushes. Then I used a metal spoon to press it at the back of the block. The basic tools work if you are on the budget. Most of all the after print is as good as.

ReplyDeleteI haven't done lino cutting since year 9 at school & remember even the teacher stabbed herself. I'm a bit clumsy, so might continue to steer clear & leave it up to you brave lady!! Love Jennie

ReplyDeletelast year I did a lino-printing course with some other arty friends and it was fantastic, we even held our own exhibition! I love the tree and yes without a press it is really hard to get a consistent coverage of the ink onto material. I used the rubbing blocks like the Japenese used with their wood blocks and that worked pretty well....check out my photo it is a self portrait from that class :-)

ReplyDeleteYour trees are a great shape. I think sometimes the uneven pressure adds to the feel of the end result.
I bought some lino cutting bits and bobs a little while ago. The last time I did any lino cut printing was during my a-level art course! A few years ago....!! Love your trees, such a natural organic shape.

ReplyDeleteI recently tried cutting some rubber stamps - and was whizzed straight back to the printmaking school days. But I can't tell you how excited I was with the ease that the tools cut through the rubber. Like butter, I'm telling you!

ReplyDeleteLove the lino. I have a square of it in the craft cupboard waiting for inspiration. Its all about the smell. I remember sitting it on the heater to warm up a bit and the feel of cutting through warm lino... mmmm... Love a good shared space too!
