When Indi's class were lino cutting in art class late last year, I made a note to try it again before too long myself. The other day I asked the art teacher to borrow the tools and a few scraps of lino and here we are.
I haven't been near the tools or the lino since I was at school, but the smell of the stuff and the feel of the cutter gliding through the lino take me right back there.
The plan is to jazz up some of the bed linens that I have been sewing with that have seen better days. While I have some bright colourful sheets, many of the sheets I have been finding in op shops are faded and worn and need a bit of a new life.
Its very early days still and I am in desperate need of a roller to apply the paint and a way to hold the lino so it doesn't smudge as it prints, but I am a bit excited at the possibilities.
Pepper is creating her own master pieces next to me.
Of course, I have been crocheting a trim or two along the way too.
I hope you are having a creative Thursday. To see some other creative spaces or perhaps play along too, click on over to Kirsty's.
You've been busy!! Lovely looking stuff. (do you have a simple granny square pattern - I'm learning :) Love the smock - must make some of those myself (and some kids cooking aprons too)
ReplyDeleteYes, yes, the smell of the lino. It's very important to the experience.
ReplyDeleteOoooh, lovely!
ReplyDeleteThe colour of that trim is just gorgeous.... *sigh*, one day I'll learn to crochet !
I don't think I could ever muster up the courage to sue a lino cutter...bad experience in high school!
ReplyDeleteLoving your designs x
I love lino! I've been playing with a lino crocodile at the moment... hoping he snaps his way onto some fabric soon.
ReplyDeleteLoving your green trees... very calming.
i love stamp carving too!!! but i never use lino, i always use rubber... lino seems tooooo "hard", but i bet they r much more durable then rubber.. love ur print!
ReplyDeleteI remember doing those at school too! My girls haven't done them yet but I hope they will at some stage. Your tree is looking great.
ReplyDeleteYour levels of creativity put mine to shame!
ReplyDeleteYour lino cut, and prints are looking gorgeous, you never cease to amaze me with all the beautiful things you make in different Mediums. xo
ReplyDeletemmm, i remember lino! I was just at Melbourne etching supplies the other day.
ReplyDeleteI started doing some hand carved stamps..which i totally forgot to add to my creative space.
enjoy and have a beautiful day Kate!
I'm not sure I have ever done Lino. Its new to me...yours looks fantastic!!
ReplyDeleteOooh I haven't carved lino since high school, what a memory! I'm sure you can glue a wooden 'handle' onto the back of the lino to hold it still whilst you stamp, any small scrap block of wood and some pva should do it!
ReplyDeleteLovely tree :)
And I bet you made Pepper's smock too!!!
ReplyDeletehey there...am into lino print myself. I do not have a proper roller to apply the color onto the lino block. what I did was using my brushes. Then I used a metal spoon to press it at the back of the block. The basic tools work if you are on the budget. Most of all the after print is as good as.
ReplyDeleteDo drop by my blog to see some of my lino print work if you like.
You funny thing. I was typing a comment in your blog and you left one in mine. Hehe:)
for a test drive that tree is gorgeous! keep up the good work! xom.
ReplyDeleteLove the linos - I should give it a go - has been too long since I did it at school:) and the kids would possibly enjoy it too:)
ReplyDeleteI haven't done lino cutting since year 9 at school & remember even the teacher stabbed herself. I'm a bit clumsy, so might continue to steer clear & leave it up to you brave lady!! Love Jennie
ReplyDeleteThe very mention of lina cutting takes me straight back to primary school! You've done a great job so far. Love the colour you're using for that crocheted trim.
ReplyDeleteI remember doing lino cutting at school. Your green trees look great Kate! Those crochet trims look beautiful.
ReplyDeleteAhhh, lino cutting, takes me back, I used to love it in art classes at school.

I love lino printing! Seriously some days I think we need to move back down south just so I can hang out with all you crafty ladies xox
ReplyDeleteLino printing is cool, I haven't done it onto fabric- what paint are you using or have you added a textile medium? Love you tree design. Very productive creative space at your house today!
ReplyDeletelove your lino cut, wonderful!
ReplyDeleteYou took me right back to high school art class (my favourite beside english lit.) I love your tree, it's just right. Cathy
ReplyDeletecarving lino is addictive! i like your ideas and design :)
ReplyDeleteI love the tree print already , what fun !
ReplyDeletelast year I did a lino-printing course with some other arty friends and it was fantastic, we even held our own exhibition! I love the tree and yes without a press it is really hard to get a consistent coverage of the ink onto material. I used the rubbing blocks like the Japenese used with their wood blocks and that worked pretty well....check out my photo it is a self portrait from that class :-)
ReplyDeleteoh lino cutting. yes - I've been wanting to get back into it too. One day, I'll get all the tools out and remind myself why I loved it so much.
ReplyDeleteYour trees are a great shape. I think sometimes the uneven pressure adds to the feel of the end result.
I bought some lino cutting bits and bobs a little while ago. The last time I did any lino cut printing was during my a-level art course! A few years ago....!! Love your trees, such a natural organic shape.
ReplyDeleteLove your work - I've had some block printing on my to do list for a while. Nic
ReplyDeleteI recently tried cutting some rubber stamps - and was whizzed straight back to the printmaking school days. But I can't tell you how excited I was with the ease that the tools cut through the rubber. Like butter, I'm telling you!
ReplyDeleteI have not down any block printing since elementary school -it looks so inviting. What a great way to jazz up the sheets and I love how you have been inspired by what the kids are doing. That crocheted trim looks addictive.
ReplyDeleteI remember lino printing at school, especially when you cut the wrong bit out!!
ReplyDeleteClare
Lino printing is cool. I did some in high school, but it seems so long ago that I can't even remember what I printed! Yours is looking great.
ReplyDeleteI love the colour of your crochet yarn too.
When do you sleep? xo.
ReplyDeleteI love your scandinavian (to me)tree! Simply gorgeous, Kate
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kristi! Do you sleep?
ReplyDeleteYou have evoked some powerful memories of art classes with the lino cuts THAT'S for sure! The glide of the curved blade through the lino like curling cold butter! YES!
Your crotched trims are so lovely. Is there a pattern you can share with those of us feeling brave enough to have a go?

ReplyDeleteLove the lino. I have a square of it in the craft cupboard waiting for inspiration. Its all about the smell. I remember sitting it on the heater to warm up a bit and the feel of cutting through warm lino... mmmm... Love a good shared space too!
