I was wearing my current winter school Mum uniform (as opposed to my farmer girl and Melbourne city girl uniforms). My Hunter boots, stripey leggings, a skirt, jumper, scarf and that's my puffy jacket on the ground over there.
Earlier this morning I had seen myself in a shop window wearing the same thing but a black skirt and thought; How boring! You need a bit of colour to brighten up your day Miss Kate!
So I came home and instead of hanging out the washing or soaking the beans for dinner, I made myself a red skirt.
It has one zipper, three layers, four darts, no unflattering elastic, a lined waist band and it is red! I didn't use a pattern but sort of took it off and on and made adjustments along the way.
If you ever see a dress making dummy that needs a loving home, please let me know.
And it twirls and whirls like the best skirts do! This afternoon Miss Jazzy told me to stop twirling though as I was embarrassing her.
Ok, stitched, worn, twirled, blogged, off to finish the beans for tacos.
Do you wear the same thing most days? Do you have a uniform? A theme? What are you having for dinner tonight?
Bye bye. X
Thanks for the pic Meg. x
Miss Prudence has led me to your blog and I am very glad she has. I have spent rather a long time this morning working my way through your archive! I jumped back to your 1st post. You said "I'd love to be able to write the type of blog that inspires me. Colourful, interesting and full of pictures.." I think you have achieved that in bucketloads!! Glad to have found you! Cx
ReplyDeleteP.S. Love the red skirt!
love your bit of colour and your style Ms Kate.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely have a uniform here, jeans, some sort of spencer(or 2) wooly jumper/cardigan, brown boots, bear scarf.
I have like 4 standard winter outifts that I rotate. I'm so boring.
though I will splash out in a dress on friday i think.
i promise xo
I definitely have a black and grey uniform (especially at the moment as lots of my clothes are not fitting anymore).
ReplyDeleteI try to add a splash of colour with lots of accessories, but I'm loving your skirt idea. Perfect!
My uniform is jeans, jeans and more jeans. My daughter is making chicken stir-fry over noodles for dinner tonight. Oh the joy of have a grown up daughter who cooks. (I did/am teaching her.)
ReplyDeleteLove your red skirt!!
Anne xx
I so love your style!
ReplyDeleteAll of it. Love it!
I'm stuck in jeans i'm afraid.
(And we're having chilli pies tonight. Miss Eva's favourite).
I just love your twirly skirt and red is rad! Great to see your dad is on the mend. Such fun macro shots too, actually I had a dream last night about those itchy little 'hitch hikers' as we call them, I'm a tad bit phobic never had head lice myself and I have very long hair. Rinsing your hair with orange juice I heard on the ABC Radio the other day works though fingers crossed we might be lucky and miss out this year!
ReplyDeletewow, from wo to go in an afternoon, and without a pattern! good work. I used to have a brand new dress form but I stupidly gave it away. If only I'd known I'd get back in to crafting... actually, I haven't made myself any clothes since then, but I'd like to.
ReplyDeleteFor dinner we'll be having steamed veges with a piece of defrosted (and cooked) meat from the freezer for the Mr. Not very exciting.
How clever of you! You look groovy.
ReplyDeleteI wear jeans and striped shirts mostly and unbrushed hair.
We had Norwegian meatballs for dinner.
Kate, that skirt is FAB, you are rocking that look :)
ReplyDeleteI love the combo of your boots and the stripey tights.
Jeans are a staple for me in the winter months...pretty boring really and we're having bacon and egg pie for dinner tonight followed by sticky date pudding :)
x
You look fantastic!!
ReplyDeleteI am a jeans and tshirt kinda gal ... bit safe really. I tend to spend my money on bangles, scarves, rings to jazz it up a bit.
Good old chicken and vegies with gravy at my house tonight.
You look so happy! Having them all in different colours sounds good, maybe this will be Wednesday skirt?
ReplyDeleteI have a few sartorial options for Winter. Varies between leggings and bright skirt (not yet handmadelike your lovely) and jeans, corduroys, nice pants with boots for my part time job with colourful wrap around top and beads and nice scarf. It makes me feel better.
Tonight we had quinoa salad with baked pumpkin, rocket and pine nuts and parmesan, sauted red cabbage with balsamic vinegar and a bit of sugar, steamed corn and a little bit of fresh fish done pan fried in the pan. We had our Babcia over for a meal.
Have a lovely week
jill x
Love it Kate. I do wear the same thing every day when Im not at work... jeans and tshirts... I so need to take a leaf out of your book and make me something more interesting to wear!!
ReplyDeleteI love your style and I love the skirt. I have trying to change my style as I was sick of wearing the same damn thing almost everyday. I am trying to mix it up a bit. I did catch myslef falling in old habits this morning and quickly slapped my self and brightened my outfit up a bit.
ReplyDeleteWow cool skirt! Love the twirl factor! You are very clever to whip that up sans pattern!
ReplyDeleteMy uniform is usually covered in splats and splotches of all sorts of things - so bold patterns are a definite!!.. And it always involves comfy boots/shoes. I can no longer abide funky shoes that kill my feet!! (Although they're still in the closet!!)
Dinner = alphabet soup!!
Cute, cute, cute. You know that I am forever in awe of your ability to "make things up".
ReplyDeleteOn the inside, I am wearing vintage chic. In the real world, I range from jeans to skirts with cardis and scarves but studiously avoid tracky daks- I have spent the past 8 years living in them and it is time to wear anything but!
A lovely twirly skirt in my favourite colour!! Twirl away!!!
ReplyDeletexx
I do have a uniform. Normally a black (or single solid colour) t-shirt, jeans, a cardi and my Kumfs.
ReplyDeleteI wore a skirt (with tights!) last week and felt all lah-de-dah and a bit up myself.
Oh, oh... I love those hunter boots and am in desperate need of the long socks to go with them. My current blundstone wellies eat my socks and they end up scrunched around my toes. Drives me bonkers.
ReplyDeleteDinner's done... off to eat some sara lee rocky road ice cream. Yum. gxo
You are SO cute Kate! That little red skirt is such a lovely splash of colour and so nifty that you whipped it up just like that! What a great idea!
ReplyDeleteI kind of have a uniform, although I do like to mix it up too. I'm a fan of the leggings and boots, but also partial to my *ahem* many pairs of jeans ;o)
It's hard to look smart and stylish in Winter, when you're running around after littlies, because you also don't want to freeze your bits & pieces off.
I Love your skirt! And the fabric!!! I'm totally a skirt and tights gal and have been looking for a similar one to make. I was wondering if you could post instructions for the skirt? I completely understand if it's too big an ask but if you had the time...
ReplyDeleteOh and love your blog. It's on my daily go-to list.:)
Just love your red skirt. My "uniform" is tracky daks and t-shirt or hoodie and barefeet - I run a under 5's movement program. Sometimes I miss my working in an office days where I got to "dress up" everyday and wear high heels - only sometimes tho ;)
ReplyDeleteWe had minestrone soup, damper and apricot pie for tea tonight.
I love colour - but I'm never brave enough to wear much!
ReplyDeleteKate that is the cutest outfit ever!!!
ReplyDeleteI love your skirt and want a pair of those strippy tights too...
I don't really have a uniform...But I do like comfy jeans when the weather turns cold...But I am trying to make myself wear skirts cause they are kind of cute...I like wearing burgundy and shades of blue...and have a "thing" for scarves at the moment...
I think you are looking positively beaming after your "big town" visit and it is lovely to see...
Fantastic skirt Kate! You've inspired me to think about a fun skirt - mine tend to be a bit stiff and boring, knee-length A-lines. Red, grey and denim seem to be dominating my 'uniform' of tops, cardigans, skirts & jeans. I try not to wear jeans all the time and love wearing skirts and boots though sometimes wimp out in the cold!
ReplyDeleteWe had tofu mushroom pie & vegies for dinner - one of my hippy favourites ;-)
I love red! You have great legs! I try to wear skirts and dresses still in winter - I'm doing a bit of layering these days. Rach x
ReplyDeleteLOVE the skirt Kate! I need to shake up my uniform with a bit of color too.
ReplyDeleteI need one in every colour too. You dress very similarly to me (but with more colour). (And flair, to be honest, but let's not dwell.)
ReplyDeleteI feel green with envy (no, make that blue - I've crossed beyond green and into blue where no sunshiney yellow exists) that you can go home and make yourself a skirt just because. BLUE, I tell ya!!
x
cool mum at the school gate! love the red skirt and your relaxed and cute style, i dress similarly, grey, red, black with crocheted scarves and brooches, dark pink converse trainers or flat brogues. cool blog too x
ReplyDeleteI'm newly into grey shirts/tops and jeans and chuck taylor sneakers. Then I can pair it with any color of funky jacket from the thrift store or a colorful bag or a great piece of jewelry. Easy quick and ever changing.
ReplyDeleteDinner?
ReplyDeleteBroccolli Salad with bacon and red onion and tri tip on the BBQ.
Brown seems to be me at the moment. And with a dash of orange! And of course a scarf.
ReplyDeleteI totally have a uniform: jeans and campers in winter. EVERY DAY! god, I am boring... I need to go SHOPPING....hmmmmmm where would be good to do that, I wonder. x ( 1!!!)
ReplyDeleteBy the way I love your twirly skirt.
ReplyDeleteThat is one amazing afternoon swizzle skirt. Love it. I definitely have a mumiform. I've often wondered if my mumiform comes for laziness, cheapness or habit. I've never ever had a job that I didn't have to wear a uniform for. And school. Am I conditioned? Tonight tucker is going to be roasted pumpkin soup. Yum.
ReplyDeleteWow! Definitely one in every colour.
ReplyDeleteOh, clever girl! I aquired a gorgeous red felted dressmaker's model in the local chuck-out day! I love how people put out their pre-loved items on the curb, and others are welcome to come along and re-home the item before the council truck comes to take it to the tip! I plan on making skirts too!
ReplyDeleteIs there anything better than red?
ReplyDeleteMy dummy (now called Martha)came from Ebay complete with her own redback spider.
I love her and despite some high anxiety and wild arm flapping, disposed of the redback.
Love the skirt Kate! I'm a jeans, jeans and more jeans (plus a polar fleece jacket in winter) kind of gal when home with the kids.
ReplyDeleteAnd dinner tonight is Corned Beef in the slow cooker plus parsley sauce and lots of veg - can't wait!
Great splash of almost winter colour. You've seen what I wear, tonight I made lamb, veg and barley soup, was a BIG hit with the boy's - not even enough for Peters packed lunch tomorrow!
ReplyDeletejust found your blog and love it. Love the clothes you make too - so pretty and lots of ideas for me to steal for art and craft workshops.
ReplyDeletex
Too funny! I pretty much do have a uniform: in summer its sundresses with flat sandals, in winter its tunics over leggings with ballet slippers. Not terribly exciting but there you have it!
ReplyDeletePerfection! Once again I am in love with your style and that skirt! oh kate...never stop twirling it is too perfect!
ReplyDeleteIf I looked like you do I would have a twirly skirt and stripey stockings in every colour. I don't do winter well. My standard winter uniform is daggy jeans and a skivvy.
ReplyDeleteWhat a foxy uniform! Your skirt really pops against the green tin. Love it.
ReplyDeleteI always felt 'smiley' in my red car, I'm looking for red boots, I love wearing red shoes, so the red skirt is a happy thing. I've been googling around the internet looking for a little help on making a layered skirt. i'm pushing 50 and wondering if I'm too old for a twirly, red skirt that is short?!?!? Oh, I hope not! Although I'm OK with a layered twirly skirt that is longer. And I like the zipper idea, because elastic may add more 'puffy' than I need!
ReplyDeleteI love the fabric with this cute print! You're right especially in that greay weather, we definitely need all the color we can get!
ReplyDeleteCarry on twirling - life is for twirling girl!
ReplyDeleteJust lovely.
