We are the last to rise in the caravan parks we camp in. We lie in bed and listen to the other campers around us doing their morning thing and then the rumble of their engines and off they go.
We get up slowly, dress, toilet, breakfast, coffee, journal, skip, fiddle with the caravan, pack up, go.
We drive, pull over, play hide and seek, what's the time Mr Wolf? and skip, we chat to other travelers, we eat, we spend hours in playgrounds, we get in the car and drive some more.
There is no rush. No one is expecting us. We have no set plans.
We have always embraced the slow food movement, we talk often of the slow childhood movement and now we are loving the slow traveling thing.
Feel free to overtake us grey nomads in your shiny caravans and clean cars. Don't stress road trains, we'll slow down and let you past.
Today we are in one of the strangest places I have ever been. A place where they mine opals, many people live underground and the landscape looks like outer space, Coober Pedy. In the next few days we'll be in the centre of Australia and then up, up, up we go...slowly.
What have you been up to? I hope you are making time to slow down and look at the scenery.
Bye. xx
Its good to stop and smell the roses....well the saltbush by the looks but you know what I mean.
ReplyDeleteI am loving watchng you take this nice, slow adventure. It looks like you're all blooming!
ReplyDeleteI have I have I HAVE. And what beautiful scenery it is too! x
ReplyDeleteI'm slowly glowing a little shade of green as I read about your wonderfully slow trip.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the crawl.
Oh my goodness - you guys are going to love looking back at this blog - at these fantastic pictures you are taking!xx
ReplyDeleteOh Kate... how utterly wonderful. I love this amazing slowness. You probably won't be surprised to read that I had a slow smile on my face reading this, a smile that just got bigger and bigger (really slowly) :)) Enjoy this fabulous time. Gorgeous photos. Kx
ReplyDeletehah. my scenery is floor fluff and cardboard boxes but yes im slowing down to look at it.
ReplyDeleteGonna milk this move for all its worth.
There! I did a food reference, milk. We ran out today at breakfast time and i was so busy that i didnt go and get any (no morning cuppa for me) until 8pm. Sooo yeah...A very slow day.
See you tomorrow, x
Oh! and you know im LOVING watching you and yours having the time of your lives!
ReplyDeleteAHHH Slow...what only most of us can dream of....so glad you have the chance to do this ..enjoy .
ReplyDeleteTops my list of strange Aussie places too. Once spent a couple of days, hard at work, opal fossicking. The day we were leaving on a pre-booked bus we had $5 to our name and for some reason it was essential to be at the laundromat rather than eat. Waiting for the wash cycle to end, I was kicking around out the front of the shop and looked down and lo! A small handful of opals must have fallen out of someone's pocket. $120 richer! So we didn't go home. Just kept going...
ReplyDeleteLove to hear your thoughts about Coober Pedy...we spent a couple of nights there last year...we thinks the vibes were all mixed up! If you can find the time and have the proper transport...The Moon Plain and The Breakaways are really worth a look.
ReplyDeleteYes...we were amazed by "the morning rush" too...like it's a race to see who gets out of the caravan park first! Enjoy. I continue to be envious.
Kate, as the daughter of Grey Nomads, I feel it is my duty to apologise for their "shiny caravans and clean cars" and their eagerness and early happy hours and chattiness.......
ReplyDeleteBut the enjoy the SLOW it sounds like bliss.
That sounds like the best possible way to travel with children. Not remorseless hours of nothingness that teaches them to hate travel but slow. I love it! Cherrie
ReplyDeleteThe slowing down is the best part of a holiday like yours...and you are SO lucky the holiday is for such a long time! Love the fun photos too :)
ReplyDeleteWow, outer space!?! You have all the fun. x Alisa
ReplyDeletesounds delightful - I've always wanted to caravan across australia - well, since I was in high school and saw Priscilla anyway.. which also means I know Coober Pedy!!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous - I love that that scenery. We lived in Roxby Downs for 2 years - we had wonderful times exploring the tracks (Oodnadatta, Birdsville, Streslecki), Lake Eyre (see it now if you can - it has water in it and is amazing) ... enjoy this uniquely Australian part of the world. Nic x
ReplyDeleteFor 17 years I have been walking my dogs across the hilltop of my town and each time I take at least a few minutes to take in the beauty of the view, imagine those who have walked that same hilltop during past millenia, watch the trees being moved by everything from gentle Summer breezes to bitter, snow-filled gales. Each time. Slow is definitely the way to live.
ReplyDeleteMy scenery this week has been our muddy yard! He,he, loving following your adventures xxx
ReplyDeleteLove the colour of the earth, so uniquely Australian. It's wonderful to follow your adventures. Keep having loads of fun

ReplyDeleteI so wish we were able to do this...we had friends of ours pass through yesterday on their way "up" too. They have decided to take 12 months off work and tour around to see what else is available.
Looks like you have passed through our neck of the woods, we live at Port Augusta. A big landscape change from here up...

ReplyDeleteI remember going to Coober Pedy when oldest and dearest was only 5...A very long time ago...But our one and only "big road trip"...it was wonderful, amazing yet just so calming too...You will love getting to Uluru...and seeing the beautiful sunsets over the rock...It makes me want to pack the kids up and just take in what life has to offer...I think I have been forgetting what it's all about...Thank you Kate for reminding me...
ReplyDeleteOh Kate.... you are travelling through places that hold a small piece of my heart within their spaces. Enjoy the trip babe it is a wonderful ride!
