Signs of springtime.

We walked through the daffodils, my smallest and I. We held a basket and a pair of scissors each. We were on a daffodil mission. We had seen some blossoming on the way into school and we wanted some for ourselves.

We were all rugged up but the winter's day was mild, sunny even.

We skipped along. We found lots of daffodils with swollen yellow heads yet to burst and we squealed with delight when we found a few flowers amongst them. Big, golden, star shaped heads with their long, thin, green stems swaying and dancing in the breeze.

She danced from flower to flower reaching down to the bottom of the stem to make her cut so it would sit well in a vase.

She got impatient with me for taking so many photos instead of helping her. But I couldn't help it. The moment was magical and I wanted to capture it and hold onto it forever. The light was just right, the shadows so pretty, the colours so bright and we were happy. Nearly springtime happy. Coming to life after a long, cold winter happy.

We picked daffodils and then we walked along the road to see what other signs of spring we would see. There are new leaves on the apple trees in the orchard, pink blossom buds on the almond tree, the swollen daffodil heads along the driveway, rhubarb in the paddocks and Daphne and Camellia flowers on the bushes. We spoke about how the days are getting longer now too and how the chooks are starting to lay more and how there is daylight when we get up in the morning.

As we walked she used a daffodil as a wand to turn me into a stone. I wanted to be a princess or a bird but she would not budge. I was a stone.

And then we came inside to feed the fire to heat the soup for lunch. The day was already getting colder and greyer.

But we have a gorgeous vase full of daffodils on the dresser now to remind us of a glorious morning and that spring is not too far away.

Are the seasons changing where you are?
Are the days slowly getting longer or shorter?
Are you dreaming of the new seasons' fruit or vegetables?
Are you dying to get out of your gumboots and into your sandals (or vica-versa)?
Are you feeling impatient for what's next like I am?

It's ballet time - gotta fly.

Bye bye blossoms. xx

  1. Great photos! Beautiful.

I'm sure it;s much warmer where I am (Central Coast NSW) but the first signs of spring are dropping here too... first asparagus shoots, new bean, tomato and pumpkin seedlings are taking off... it is an exciting part of the year, seeing the garden and country side come to life!!

Lots of fresh projects being planned and commenced also!

  2. There are certainly signs of change here. We start the day rugged up but very soon we are peeling off the layers until we are in our short sleeves!.I'm liking the lengthening days and spending the later afternoons in the garden.New season's fruit and vegies are certainly on my mind, we like to get a little head start.

  4. How idyllic!

It's definitely still cold here, but there's something about the light, and the certain warmth in the sun, that says that spring is on it's way. I can't wait.

  5. All kinds of heaven here! Your girl, those plaits, that basket, those daffofils, the fact you can find daffodils growing in the wild. Such beautiful shots. And the impatience for change here is bubbling stronger by the day. Let that sun light in I say! Wishing you a week of loveliness :) x

  6. Oh what gorgeous photos! I envy your bunch of daffodils, mine in the garden are a little bit behind still, but they are coming! Today was the first sunny day I felt warm outside doing the chores in months, and I'm so excited for spring and SUMMER!! Must get on with planning the vegie garden next! Fresh home grown tomatoes, basil, and everything that goes with it!

  10. Lovely pictures. It has been very warm here today, 25 degrees! This makes me a little worried about what summer will bring but enough of that...I see signs of spring in my garden and feel the spring winds coming too. I am looking forward to the first G&T of the season.

  13. I am right there with you - longing for spring and rejoicing at the glimpses I am seeing wherever I look. It is so close, the sun is higher, the shadows are shorter, the air has a scent to it. I can't wait.

Gorgeous photographs of your littlest. Just perfection.

  14. I love winter, love it with a passion, but the other morning I thought to myslef "I am sick of wearing jeans." That's a sign I am ready for Spring.

Today I looked at my garden & thought " This needs work, its been neglected over wïnter." Another sign I'm ready for Spring...

While planning dinner I thought "I think I'm sick of soup." Yet another sign I'm ready for spring.....

  16. Love your pictures of daffodils. One of the joys of blogging is seeing how it is all across the world. Here the roses are beginning to go over. Today we will pick a large bunch whilst we still can and we are going in search of blackberries to go with our first apple windfalls. And so the world turns and the seasons bless us with their own glories. It brings a sense of peace to me to know that. Thank you for your post x

  17. I found a dragonfly resting on the raspberry canes about two weeks ago. In my mind, dragonflies are autumn creatures. The light is different and the days are getting shorter here in the South of England.
I am keen to get into the garden to start planting for spring.
Not long now til the leaves start turning yellow.

  20. In a few weeks, I will be in the desert and it will be 38 degrees...and you know that I as much of a winter person as you aren't. So I am savouring the cooler weather, the wear-my-slouch-hats-and-coat weather, the don't-worry-about-sunscreen weather.

Beautiful, beautiful photos and another lovely post. You are a very talented stone.

  22. She look like Laura Ingalls :-)

In Pretoria it heats up to the mid 20' already.
Yesterday I washed and stored the winter duvets and blankets. We sowed some cherry tomatoes and peas (a bit late) against the front fence on the sidewalk. We made seedbombs with flower seeds.

We're waiting it out for the spring rains, which last year only arrived in Oct. And we're expecting a dry summer this year.

  24. Where I am in the US we are coming to the end of our summer and heading for fall. It"s been a HOT summer so the cool air is going to be a welcome change! :)

  25. That there is THE reason you live where you do, and endure the cold and icy Winter. Those bobbing yellow heads make it all worthwhile. It's too hot here to grow daffodil very successfully; unless you're an absolute green thumb, which I am not. I have dreams and visions of walking in fields like that of Spring time blooms - those classic English country side blooms. Thank y so much for taking us on this walk with you - my heart sang and lifted looking at these photos and sharing the walk with you. I can't wait to see the flowers on your table (perhaps on IG). I imagined my little 5yr old walking alongside Pepper picking flowers - choosing just the right ones. And oh - she wld surely love a flower wand.
Here we have white plum blossoms in ur paddock. I think also, that if we remove a few trees we may be able to see them from our new house build - maybe from the bathroom or even my bedroom. (oh when it's all built.....).

Have a lovely end of yr week

I meant to say, have a lovely end of your week Miss Kate.
And also many many thanks for my super sweet spotty tights - I've been so enjoying wearing them. Xxxxx

  27. Well, these pictures are something else! My 5 year old would die for plaits as long as Pepper's! I love the change of season whatever the direction, it makes the days feel special.

I am so looking forward to Spring. Winter has been long and hard full of flu's, colds and illness. Bring on the feeling of the sun on my back.

  31. What a lovely post. Have you ever considered homeschooling, or part time school? It can be the best of both worlds!!! It's starting to feel like fall here, the Vine Maples are turning and the light seems to be softening as well. Thanks for sharing sweet bits of your life.

  32. Lovely photos to keep forever. Miss Pepper looks amazing in all that blue. Just beautiful. I treasure memories of August holidays in the Blue Mountains as a child. Five minutes after arrival we would be down at a long abandoned dirty picking hundreds of freesias, just out and smelling like spring. The tiny house where we stayed would be full of their perfume.

You too are making beautiful memories for her to treasure.

  34. ah, I have just spent a while going back over your posts - I have been away from blogging for a bit. funnily enough one of the life things we have been doing instead is enjoying our esse 990 - we ripped the middle bench out of the kitchen and put it there and then brought a couch into the kitchen - hoo - that was a good move - life is grand from a couch in front of the esse!
i am just having a crack at your greens and cheese bread.
we will get radiators soon with luck.
cheers for the esse love share!

  36. Daffodils of different hues are whispering of Spring but the hail screams loudly of winter, can't wait until the bare feet of December.

  37. Thanks for all these beautiful pics! It's so funny to look at daffodils when autumn is just around the corner here. The last weekend with over 40°C was kind of exhausting, but I love summer and I hope autumn with all its rain and so on will still wait a good while ;-).

  38. I don't blame you for snapping away! I do the same with my smallest and what a beautiful girl and day for you both. Spring is slowly blooming here in Victoria and I'm sure is particularly breathtaking in Daylesford :)

  41. Today was 80 degrees(F) and the grasses are golden and dry. I just felt the fall winds come in this morning and the sun doesn't seem as strong and hot. It won't be long before the leaves are turning and fall is at our doorstep. You can bet I'll be looking and longing at all your summer pictures here in a few more months.

  44. Hi Kate
Have only just discovered your blog - sorry! Really enjoying it. Have been reading some of your older entries where you've made dresses for your girlies in florals with mismatched sleeves and several fabrics for the main body - do you ever make these for big people ie 40-somethings?!! Not sure if you've got a shop or how to find a link to it.
    Many thanks
    Sally (UK)
