No destination.

The strangest thing is the journey with no destination. The no plan.

At home, in our real lives, we fly through each day trying to get the most done. Like a race from morning to night. My farmer boy has three to-do lists going most of the time: A today list, a short term list and a longer term list. I race around from one thing to the next, housework, making, baking, taking, picking up and dropping off. We always have something we should be doing and somewhere we should be going. A plan.

But this journey will take some getting used to. Six months with a car and a caravan. Driving, exploring, seeing, camping...no place to go, no place to be.

We hitch up the caravan, we jump in the car, we drive. We stop at playgrounds, for tea breaks and meals, or if we see something we'd like to see a bit closer.

There is no are we there yet because we don't have a there.

A couple of days after we set off, we'd been driving for a while when Miss Pepper asked why we were going to so many places and where would we be at the end? That's what the caravan adventure is, we told her for want of a better answer, going to lots of places and seeing lots of things.

Will we leave here today and head off or tomorrow? Will we go to Adelaide or skip it? Will we drive for a whole day or half? Will there be op-shops? playgrounds? markets? other kids? Will we have a bbq for dinner or tacos?

Who knows?

No plans.

Only adventures.

Happy weekending folks. Hope there are lots of adventures for you too.

  1. A shot of the outside! Only yesterday was showing your photos to my husband. And he more or less said the important things hadn't been covered , like the size of the caravan, what car was towing it etc. So maybe your farmer boy might have to do a guest blog to satisfy all the blokey stuff?!Which in turn will help all of us out there who want to do what you are doing but have to convince our other halves first.

  9. Sounds like you're doing an awesome job of switching off from routine & embracing the trip, already!! Well done!!
Look at those happy faces & how TALL are your girls getting?? My eldest will over take me soon, i'm 5'6" so it's hardly a huge marker but they'll be aiming for my tall husband next.
Are you a bit judgemental of other people's organic fruit & vegetable though?? Love Posie

  15. Oh please don't skip Adelaide (at least not the Adelaide Hills) There is lots to see and do and some of the locals are lovely (just a bit biased!) You can always email me if you want a list of stuff to do and you're welcome for a cuppa if you want to come and see where one of your dresses ended up LOL!

  17. I think you'll be living in a different world for the next six months or so! It is quite a funny sensation..enjoyable though..when you're outside of the 'work Australia' and in more of a tourist mode. We took a couple of weeks to move from Canberra to Qld a few years ago and then had several months to find our feet here when we arrived, I think we grew even closer to the kids and loved our new adventure..I know you will as well. Maybe you could leave a few craft footprints along the way in various places..a couple of pom bombed bushes?? A small crocheted toy in a bag for a serendipitious encounter with a small child??? Did you bring any of Kellies 1000 Homes of Happiness??

  30. Oh the memories you will all bring back. The times at the dinner table which will begin with...'remember the time we.." and go on from there. We have taken two trips with our 4 kiddos to the West Coast of Canada and to the East Coast of Canada, we live north of Toronto sort of middleish in Canada. We tented the entire time took bikes and a gypsy looking trailer to haul all of our 'essentials'. My guys are 15, 19, 20 and 22 now but we still pull out the pix and reminise(sp?) about those 2 amazing trips. We are both teachers so our trips fit into our summer holidays not the adventurous 6 mos you daring-dos are taking on. Best of luck and be assured I will be checking in on your progress--Have tons of fun!

  32. It will take time for you to relax into the lack-of-plan scheme. You'll get there. And you'll love it.
The hard part will come in 6 months time when you have to start running to schedule again.

  39. Six months without a to-do list is my idea of nirvana - but maybe that's because I've just drawn a line through the 5 year old's birthday party! No, I could happily take off for six months, and I'm rather envious and inspired at the same time.

    Your girls are SO lucky.

    Keep us posted Kate!
