Monday early in the afternoon

Eight shots from our weekend;

(1-3) One of the best parts of autumn is the bonfires.

(4) Visiting the Holy Goat girls and meeting Giselle the goat who will soon be coming to live with us and have kids and provide us with milk.

 (5) Still preserving.

(6) His beloved compost steaming.

 (7) Knitting a red beanie for Miss Jazzy.

(8) The kitchen garden at dusk.

Monday early in the afternoon.

So far today: we got the girls up and off to school, had a quick coffee in town with my parents and then I did a pilates class. Pilates is ace for me. Farming and mothering are hard on my body and pilates feels a bit like a weekly tune up. It slows me down and helps me to remember to breathe, keep my shoulders down and do things properly. I've been doing pilates for nine years!!

And now I'm home sitting on the couch with a blankie on my knees answering emails about my book, filling in an author's survey and finding some photos of our family and farm for the publicity.

I still feel very self conscious when I'm referred to as the author.

There is clean washing in the machine to hang out, there is tonight's dinner to think about (onion soup?), I can see my farmer boy out the window filling up the vegie beds with compost, there's a zillion unanswered emails in my inbox and a house full of the weekend's mess to deal with, there are seeds to plant, apples to dehydrate and some phone calls to return.

But all I really feel like doing is having a long hot bath and listening to a podcast or hopping back into bed with my knitting.

I never ever do things like that. Especially not on a Monday when the to-do list is so high it's threatening to topple over. When the rest of my week is looking so crazy busy that now might be my only chance. But the pull of the cozy over the constructive is huge and strong.

Maybe I'll make the soup base and a bread dough and see.

Maybe I'll answer four emails for every four knitting rows.

Maybe I'll have lunch and then decide.

Maybe...

I hope your week is super lovely friends.
Have you got anything fun planned?

Bye bye. xx

  1. Beautiful, rich autumn goodness in your post Kate! Love those goats, cant wait to see your adventures with them. Family bon-fires are the best aren't they? There is just something about a fire. Have a lovely week x

  2. Lovely photos as always Kate. I look forward to seeing how the goats settle in and especially the milking part. We don't have the space for a cow here but we've talked about a goat.
I love your kitchen garden bunting. What a lovely idea. Look forward to the books release. The cover looks very inviting :)

  3. Gorgeous as always Kate. Here it's sunny and cool and I've been home all day with a nasty headache. But I'm hoping by weeks end I would have cooked a meal every night to put on the table, finished one quilt top, made a skirt and planted my spring onions. It's nice to have a goal.

  4. Lovely pics Kate! I used to hate Mondays (why does the weekend make SO much mess?), but then I decided that I would dedicate them entirely to cleaning/tidying and doing "boring" chores. If there was any spare time left in the afternoon then I would blog or knit....so there was spare time left on this Monday. I'm editing pics and writing posts whilst I wait for the dough to rise for dinner. Enjoy the onion soup!
    Have a happy week!

  6. I thought of you as I ventured to Bendigo for the first time ever and passed the turn off for your patch - albeit the sadness of a friends funeral for my trip - the leaves turning were delightful. xx As for fun planned, I'm nesting and moving rooms around! xx

  7. I love Mondays. I'm starting to set goals this week, that is my goal! And to follow through on them! Such a beautiful autumn day today. One of my goals is to get out to your area on Mothers Day for a bushwalk. Hope I succeed. x

  9. I love reading your posts Kate! It truly feels like you are chattering away. Maybe, maybe, maybe ... I can so relate to the never doing cosy, lazy things anymore - just this weekend past, with my husband still away and my teenage daughter fast asleep, could I stay in bed and knit? No of course not! It just felt wrong! And the four emails to four rows of knitting - I pay myself like that all the time. I'll read and take notes on two articles and then piece one block .... Wishing you plenty of peace in your coming week :-)

  11. Lovely blog posting. Am just a small bit jealous. I would have much preferred to have had a day like that but had to go into the office [sigh] for the day [double sigh].

But tomorrow (and there will always be a tomorrow - woo hoo) I will be working from home, enjoying the view, getting loves from my animals and maybe... just maybe I can relax for a bit [aaahhhh, nice sigh]

  12. What gorgeous photos! I love autumn. The first school term always seems so busy & frenetic, even more so in early autumn when we have a few seasonal activities at school and two of my children have their birthdays (well, one of them's February 26). But then April arrives and things start to settle down, and then term two is just much calmer. Usually by the end of May its freezing and I'm ready to skip straight to Sugust, but at this point it's still gorgeous days, autumn leaves but with blue skies and a still-warm sun. What's not to love?

  13. Oh what gorgeous photos and EEEK!!!! how exciting that your book is almost upon us!!! Autumn is such a lovely time to bunker down with a winter craft like knitting (although I'm hopeless at it, so I crochet)... I hope you got a long soak in the bath. This week I'm hoping to get some much needed crafting myself. I've set a bit of a personal challenge to attach my fabric stash...then on the weekend we head your way to Kate and Ro's first weekend workshop. so excited!! xx

  17. Or maybe, just maybe... You knit away hours on end and let everything just be. Sometimes that can feel good to. Almost a little bit rebellious to just give up all responsibilities and grown up expecting chores and do what I WANT RIGHT NOW, like a child throwing a tantrum. Although knitting is kind of a nice and calm tantrum that won't disturb anyone in a miles sight.:D

  22. I agree with you on the Pilates front Kate, my 40+ body just ain't what it used to be. It aches and creaks and stiffens up like all .... I've tried many things, but a weekly session does wonders and is definitely a necessity rather than a treat. Only last night Geoff said I MUST go see a sports doctor for my MECHANICAL problems as he doesn't want to be lumbered with a, how did he put it, gnarly, hobbly old wife!

It was fun, the kids absolutely loved it, my four year old daughter got on my six yr old son's bike and pedalled off on it!!! First time! *goes a bit misty eyed* !!!!

  25. When we lived in the Adelaide Hills on a couple of acres we had two goats. They were brother and sister. They were the best pest we've ever had. Goats love having a friend or else they get very lonely. I loved that about them. xx
