Pixie.

Late yesterday afternoon our beautiful Pixie dog died.

Pixie who was going to turn 12 next month died at the vet's in Bren's arms of unexplained causes.

Pixie who we found in a cardboard box at a market in Stanthorpe in Queensland. The box said free and that any puppies left at the end of the day would be put down the following day. Once we found out that she and I shared the same birthday, it was a done deal.

Pixie was mine and Bren's baby before we had babies.

Pixie who travelled up and down the East coast with us in our combi, often falling asleep under the clutch pedal stopping us from changing gears.

Pixie who has been the best guard dog we could have ever hoped for.

Pixie who was so loyal to us except when it came to Bren's parents. She loved nothing more than a sleep over at their place and a meal of stinky canned food.

Pixie who preferred to sleep in front of her kennel rather than inside.

Pixie who loved chasing and running and driving around in the front seat of Bren's ute and getting a good scratch behind the ear.

Pixie whose name will forever be used and laughed at when the girl's work out their porn names; Pixie Fox.

Pixie who will now sleep forever in her grave under the oldest apple tree on top of our hill.

It is such a sad day in our house today. We will miss you so much Pix! XX

  2. Oh Kate, I was so sad last night when you told me but now seeing her, she looks so much like my Zac and seeing her smiling like that, my heart is breaking for you, all of you, she was lucky to have had Bren there with her when she died, at least she wasn't alone.

You ahve written such a beautiful story about her life and about her.
I really think Dogs are our teachers, they come here to teach us what absolute unconditional love is. I am so sure she taught you that.
Big big hugs to all of you. xxx

  4. Oh Kate (and Bren and the girls) - I'm so sad for you. It hurts to say goodbye to our furry best-buddies and Pixie looks like she was a big hearted, full of love thing, with her great smile.

12 years of love and adventure and dying in the arms of one of my best mates, sounds like an ok way to go though.

    Sending good thoughts your way.

  7. How wonderful you had such a special friend. Dog's like Pixie are so special.
I still go out and talk to my dog Toohey who is buried under our walnut tree. She's missed too. I can now smile as I remember the happiness she brought.

  8. I've no idea how I came to give Pixie a name I invented: Pixilena. But that's what I called her. And she never objected. She was such an affectionate and contented dog. She would've been honoured by your beautiful eulogy, Kate. You've done her proud. Repaid her for all those years of loyalty and friendship.
    Vale Pixilena.

  16. Oh Kate. Pregnancy hormones and your beautiful writing have me a blubbering mess... perhaps remembering my own dogs who lived with us for so long... I've always found it hardest when my dogs have died. They are not just pets are they? The quiet after they go makes it that much harder. What a beautiful girl Pixie was. So much love to you all today. xxxx

  21. Hugs to you and your family Kate. It must be such a sad time for you all, and I agree that it was good that she had Bren there with her when she passed on, at least she wasnt alone. I always feel as though a member of the family is gone when your doggie passes on, they make such an impact on our lives. I imagine there will be lots of visits to the tree for little memory sessions and a chat in the future.

  40. Oh Kate, I'm so sorry. My condolences to you and your family.

Our fur babies are so special, aren't they? I'd be lost without my cats (who are almost thirteen). I don't know how they'll cope when the baby arrives, although I've promised them they'll still be allowed to sleep in the bed.

How blessed Pixie was that you found her and made her part of your family. She'll live on in your hearts. The apple tree on the hill sounds like a beautiful resting place for her.

  60. I'm so sorry for your loss. Losing our little ones is such a hard thing to endure. In July I had to put my sweet Sushi Bear to sleep... natural causes set in there, too. I'm glad you have her close by so you can visit. I know it helped to have my Sush under our willow tree. She actually paid me a visit just last month. I'm guessing your Pixie will visit you, too. My best to you and your family.
