still making…x

This afternoon I spent a while in the tee-pea.

The sun was shining for the first time in days and it was actually warm when I was standing in it. Farmer Bren was reading seed catalogues out to me for our orders. And I should have been doing a million other things but I wasn't.

At first I felt a bit silly as I climbed up on the chair, reached over the little pea plants and started to wind my wool. Wouldn't my time be better spent weeding the garlic, or planting out the leeks, or pricking out the tomatoes, or cutting the spinach, or mowing, or, or, or….?

And if I had listened to that nagging voice I'm sure I would have felt great when I crossed something off my mile long list, but I'm still glad I ignored it.

And the entire time I was making something that would never be worn, or eaten, or used in any way, my heart felt happy.

I was making, just for making and it felt great.

And my world was still for a while. For the first time in the longest while.

It's funny but I think this afternoon was what I had thought a lot of this year would be like. All three girlies at school and so much time to create.

And even though we're so close to the year's end, I'm hoping that now I've started I wont be able to stop.

I feel really happy!

And I'd love to know what made you feel happy today?
Or what you made just for fun?
Do tell.

xx

  1. I spent the day not allowed to do any work, strict request by my 4 year old. We had a great day and when I said it was really nice for Mummy not to do any work and just play with you, she replied with, but you did work, you hung out washing and cleaned the kitchen! Clearly I need to do NO WORK. Kids orders.

  2. The thing that made me happiest today was the fact I got 4.5hrs sleep in a row uninterrupted. It might not seem like a big deal or even that special but my baby has not been sleeping well, not well at all & after weeks & weeks & weeks of getting no more than two & a half hours sleep at a time I woke up this morning feeling fresher than I have in months. I'd love to think it's the start of something great but honestly I'm just so grateful for that sleep I got last night. It made my day :)
P.S I love your woven creations. I should make some for my veg patch- are they easy to do?

  3. Your artwork is beautiful. It is wonderful when you get in that zone.

I know what you mean, thinking you would have more free time. I have three teenagers and I have less time now than when they were young. Their lives and thereby, my own life is completely different than the young years. I try to remind myself to be present and enjoy this moment and really, really appreciate one of those creative and blissful moments that you have just experienced. Enjoy. Carla

  6. What made me happy today? A co-worker's new dog, and working on a shawl as a surprise gift for a friend in Colorado who has gone through wildfires and floods the past two years. The shawl will be my long distance hug for her.

  8. I have made those little cobwebs with the little girls at Rainbows and they loved them, so relaxing. Happy? I finished a sleeve for my collage jumper which is not moving as quickly as I would have liked. Fun? I did two hours gardening without my little ones bickering! Jo x

  10. beautiful! Your post and the idea of wrapping sweet pea trellis next year after our winter made me so happy...thank you for that inspiration! visiting my children's oldest friends and watching them play (we met when we were all in anti natal classes together and 8 years on are still very close) made me so happy! The way the kids hug my disabled daughter, to them she is just tilly, they have known her forever, there is no hesitation to love her...that made my soul sing! And the look on trick or treaters faces as i open the door with my newly dyed vivid pink hair....should trick or treaters be more astonished by your appearance than you by theirs?...very funny! these things made me smile on this day! x

  18. I made a little stuffed owl for my babe - just for fun. I should have been doing housework, but just didn't feel like it last night after dinner. Here's how it turned out. http://lifewiththecrew.typepad.com/my-blog/2013/11/autumn-owl.html

  20. Smiling from ear to ear... ♥♥♥
I've just come out of hospital and I'm under doctors orders to take it easy (nothing serious but let's just say it's a procedure that requires you to behave like Cleopatra and get your minions to do EVERYTHING for you!) It's been frustrating but at the same time quite sacred. The safest thing I can do is rest and create. Really what am I complaining about hey?? I have been given this special time to "make for the sake of making" and I have no idea why I'm fighting it. What with Chrissy being around the corner you'd think I'd relish the free hours. Well this post of yours has inspired me to do just that Kate! Thank you lovely one. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

  21. Oh Kate, I love moments like these when I just create for creating a sake. It feeds my soul. I find it fills my tank and gives me the energy to keep going. I'm trying to make more time to do it, although it is still very rare and so hard to ignore the to-do list. I am starting to see it as a necessity for my mental health rather than a diversion. Your tee pea is stunning and you can be reminded of that feeling of freedom whenever you walk past.

  22. What made me happy? reading your post! What a beautiful description of how we all feel. Ignoring the nagging voices and taking the 'shoulds' out of our lives and creating 'just because'.

    You have made my day.

  23. Your "yarn and twig sculptures" are so colorful that one cannot help but be inspired to emulate. Is the yarn your own home-spun fiber? The colors just shimmers.

Making fills me up in so many ways that it's difficult to list them all. Finding, enjoying childhood friends and remembering with them has been so much fun the last few days. Halloween was just a joy on so many levels: I made cute treat bags for my fave two Littles, at four and five they truly Get Halloween and the treat aspect of it (http://lyndaland.blogspot.com/2013/10/halloween-treat-bags.html); we asked the kids as they came to the door if they wanted "Sweet or Salty?" stopped most of them right in their tracks. A huge success and lots of fun.

Playing with yarn on a crochet hook has relaxed me. Listening to the Traveling Wilbury's in headphones has me rocking in my chair as I type this so Yeah, happy is good and the leaves changing around me adds to the color aspect of that fun. Thank you for asking; and for sharing your world with us; so very different and so charmed.

I do read every single comment you leave and appreciate it very much, but I should let you know that I can be a wee bit on the useless side when replying to comments, that's just me, everyday life sometimes gets in the way....so I'll apologise now, just in case.
