Red skirt.

On Friday I crocheted the Butterfly Garden square (blue).

On Saturday I crocheted the Duckbill Dalliance square (red).

On Saturday after we finished the farm chores, we drove out to an organic farm near Woodend to deliver Buster the Maremma. I knitted and farmer Bren drove. We got lost. Eventually we got found. We won't be following google maps again in a hurry.

It was fun visiting another organic farming family, watching the reunion of Buster and his sister Joey and talking all things cows and sheep and chooks and vegies. It was not so much fun having my shoulder treated and crying in front of about 10 fascinated onlookers.

Saturday was Mothers Day. I woke up to millions of cards, three pots of geraniums and 13 rose bushes. I cooked up a pancake feast, we watched a movie, ate popcorn, played pass the parcel and did the farm chores. I crocheted the Diamond Petals square, we ate lentil pasta for late lunch and chocolate pudding for dinner. It was the greatest day. I felt well spoilt and well loved.

I used to think Mothers day was the best when they were babies, but I can see now that it's only getting better.
And today amongst a gazillion jobs and odds and ends, farmer Bren took a sledge hammer to the bricks in the kitchen where the wood-fired cooker will go and I hid in the sewing room and turned a thrifted, two dollar pile of red knit fabric into a skirt. The kitchen is a mess, the inside of my new red skirt is a mess, but we are one step closer to the new oven and hopefully no one will ever see the inside of my new skirt, so it's all good.

Good.

A new week.

I wonder what it has in store for us.

What have you been up to?
What have you got planned?
Do you wear red clothes?
Do you think red clothes make you happy?
Do you like the little bias binding trick I used to weigh down the skirt and make it hang better?
What's making you happy?

Bye!

PS. All the links to the squares I have been crocheting are on my Ravelry project page here.

  1. Lovely as always Kate...here we are also doing farm chores, school, cooking, growing and everything in between. As for planning: a big lunch with friends at our place, soon. Good luck with the new oven :)

  2. The crochet square patterns are really pretty. I especially love the Butterfly garden.
    Sounds like a fab weekend.
I really like the bias binding, it gives it a lift and makes it individual. I only have one red dress and a tangerine cardi. I'm so 'taupe' when it comes to clothes. But, I've always had a thing for dark cherry knee high boots or other shoes - go figure?

  4. The butterfly garden square is fab. I've followed the link and printing instructions as I type. Farm chores, weeding the garden and making bread today. And yes, I wear red because it makes me happy, though I find it difficult to know what colour to wear with red.

  5. Red shoes are my fave, I have patent red-cherry slip on ones and strappy bright red sandals from my sister's wedding 10 years ago and some crimson Mary Janes, they always make me feel a a million bucks. Red scarves, red lipstick and red nail polish on my toes...a little bit of red is good for you, my kitchen has a tiled red wall where our cooker is set in (just remembered that!)

  6. I am loving watching your daily hooky goodness. I checked out the link from your last post and have put a few in my 'to make' list, but they must wait until I'm finished my first crochet clothing item - a cardigan for my Miss 5 to wear to school, I'm afraid it may not be finished in time to wear this year!
I love red clothes. I'm wearing my me-made red corduroy skirt right now.

  8. Red, red, I love red. Every day I try to convince my three small girls that red is better than pink. Some days I get my way.

  10. Why do I feel compelled to try and look up your skirt now...? ;o)
I love red. I used to be scared to wear and then I did and got a zillion compliments. I love, love, love my red boots and happily wear them with my pink jeans because rules were made to be broken. Blue and green SHOULD be seen!!!
I caught up with Peta and her big baby belly - gorgeous.
I hope your skirt is twirly whirly xx

  13. I'm mad for red cardi's but i'm contemplating a pair of red shoes. I really like the skirt you made. I've been braiding a rug and sketching leaves which may become a woodblock print i'm having a go at on the weekend. You got broccoli, lucky! Mine is so sliw to grow, especially my seedlings x

  15. red is a winter colour for me and I need to be feeling confident to wear it. Mostly I wear greens and blues. Like that diamond petal square - don't think Ive seen that any where else..

  16. LOVE that red skirt. Just gorgeous. We've been outside enjoying the sunshine and clear weather (even though it is pretty cold and today could see lots of snow on the big hill). Moving the chookies into the orchard and relishing in their eating the slugs and bugs. Cooking with my girlies. Hanging out in the "cubby cafe" and organising afternoon teas to be "sold". Sitting near the dam and just watching the ducks. Tromping through the long grass paddock now that it is too cold for the wiggly sticks. Having a great time - thanks for asking xx

  17. Red is the best. I can't wear it, it just doesn't suit me BUT! I've got a red couch, red kitchen chairs, a red high chair and oodles of red cushions. Love your red skirt. I'm making an effort to wear skirts this year on the orders of my 5 year old, who is way more fashion conscious than I am - she has a red skirt just like yours that I made for her last year, and its her favorite and best. Enjoy wearing it!

  18. Your sentence about mother's day only getting better as the kiddos get older resonated with me. This was the first year I received a handmade gift my son made for me at school. Be still my heart. I can't wait for next year now.

So glad to have come across your blog. Love it!
