In theory

I have a theory that mostly people get stuck on the details and don't see the bigger picture. At least I hope so when it comes to my crazy, chaotic, colourful home.

I have a theory that the mail you pick up in the morning dictates the type of day you'll have.

Too many bills - not so great.
No mail - blah.
An invitation or postcard - fun.
A surprise prezzy - WOHOOOO!!!!

Today I had a GREAT day!!

Thanks beautiful Dria and family for this amazing, amazing, amazing parcel of wool from Israel. The most wonderful present of all. xx

I have a theory that kale added to any meal automatically makes that meal extra healthy.

Tonight we ate kale in our pasties and in the salad. Healthy ++

I have a theory that once these last few tomatoes are finished, I can go without for the next six months if I find something to eat on my toast instead.

In the last few days I've tried pickled beetroot, semi dried tomatoes, pickled cucumbers and olives but I'd still prefer a little, rosy red cherry.

I HAD a theory that I would come home from Israel and cook Middle Eastern every day, but I really haven't. Except once.

Maybe I should have had a theory about focusing on the actual food more and the eating less.

I have a theory that my life is about to become VERY full of caravans and caravan merch.

I made 20 of these felt caravan book marks for some sales people out of that felt I bought last week. I hope they like 'em.

I have a theory that if you pop some interesting detail at your front door, people might not notice the enormous pile of shoes and gum boots. Maybe?

Actually, maybe that theory doesn't really work. If they don't notice them they're more likely to trip over them. Not so good after all.

And I have a theory that the excitement of winter's first broccoli is right up there with the excitement of spring's first asparagus and summer's first berries. Yum!

I have more.
But that's probably enough for now.
Do you have a theory on one of my theories, or a theory or two of your own?
I'm all ears.

xx

  6. I have been trying to grow broccoli unsuccessfully for a couple of years. We now have some that has self-seeded and is looking perfect for eating. It's a great feeling! I guess my theory is that self-seeding is my secret vegetable growing weapon.

    1. Me too... the stuff that self seeds always grows better. We have so many tomato plants that pop up and for some reason the bugs just don't like those ones and their fruit is super sweet. YAY for self seeding :)

  8. I have a theory that reading a new post on your recently found blog makes my day a lot more cheerful. And I have a theory that experimental cooking and baking makes me calm and peaceful. And I have a third theory that being friendly to people is a very positive way to change the world. And one fourth and last theory: I learn from your blog and other blogs so much about life and I get so much inspiration that I don't want to quit anymore. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

  9. Oh. Ha ha ha! You really got me at the "pop some interesting detail at your front door and people might not notice the enormous pile of shoes and gum boots..." and I thought that was a great idea until you mentioned that people will trip over them instead... Makes sense. Not such a great idea after all... Ha ha ha. I love reading your busy thoughts.

  10. I have a theory that if I recycle one more thing that was going to be thrown away I have saved money and energy - even if I had to buy a zip/button/ribbon to complete it. I have just recycled some old wool that was destined for the tip see here - but I did have to buy another to complete it. Lovely post Kate Jo x

  12. I had that same theory about interesting things at the front door, but I think it makes me notice how many spider webs grow around them and all the stuff that gets stuck in the webs.
My other theory is that a new blog post from you brightens my day.
Have a great week with lots of nice mail.

  13. I have a theory that as soon as seeds shoot in our garden, something comes along to eat them. I have a theory that nothing is a lovely as greeting the chickens in the morning. I have theory that the sunsets have never been so magnificent as they are this winter!

  15. Your posts are always spot-on Kate and gosh they make me smile. The kale thing made me laugh...we had lamb shank pies for dinner last night, home made, home grown, home produced but not necessarily healthy. A little kale on the side made it all OK.

You know I love those felt caravans and I am so excited about your book x

  16. Love the Kale theory! I throw it in everything too - it's there, but hidden. It makes me happy. I have a theory that eating straight from the earth gives me super powers. I'm still waiting for them to manifest.... I'm ready.

I also have a theory that sometimes we cab a bit blasé about breast cancer because we see so many people have it and then they are ok. But sometimes they aren't and we need to have breast checks EVERY MONTH!

  19. your front door theory is my fave.
Every morning I open the door to see what offering our pup has laid on our door mat. So far there has been eel, a possum skull, a chewed-up pooey nappy....
how many pot plants would i need to hide that do you think?? ;)

I have a theory that the weather people tell us it'll rain just so we don't put the sprinklers on.
I have a theory that if I wash my floors the kids will walk mud/sand/water through the house so there is no point cleaning the floors!

I agree with your mail theory 100%.

  22. I have a theory that in the early morning, if I put the small percolator on the stove, my husband will get out of bed. If I put the large percolator on, he will sleep in. I so love Monty Python's "I have a theory by Anne Elk" skit. I can still quote it after all these years. I like your theories even better. K8

  23. I have a theory that, if the people who are coming through your door are noticing your enormous piles of shoes and gumboots, are they the kind of people u want in there anyway?!!! Or am I being unnecessarily harsh? I have a theory that socialism could work one day, somewhere! Lots of love winging its way from Blighty xxx ps looks like we might be getting an allotment. I think I'll be reading a lot about gardening theory, as I am not what u would, ahem, call an expert!

  26. I love everything about this post. I'll try a theory inspired by my own personal events today: I have a theory that taking yourself on a solitary lunch date could be just what you needed to make a friend or two. :)

  27. Loving your theories Kate and I can definitely subscribe to most of them, the others I'm totally ignorant about :) I do heartily agree that I lose sight of the big picture often and I have a well-practised theory that continental parsley goes well with everything and makes everything healthier :) Thanks for this - made me smile. 33. Ohh I love your mail theory! That is totally how it goes here too. The worst is no mail at all.. blaaaah. I hate opening up the mailbox and seeing nothing but cobwebs.

How do you cook kale in your pasta? I think mine is probably reading for eating (although it's the first time I've grown it, so I could be way wrong!) and adding some to pasta sounds pretty good.
