Help?

Hello!

How're things with you?

I've just been sitting here looking at the pictures and videos of the awful devastation caused by the floods in Queensland and feeling pretty helpless and devastated. I can't even imagine how terrifying it must be for all the people living through this disaster.

So, we've already donated money but its time to make a difference with some crafty action. Early last year I crocheted a bunny and auctioned it off on my blog to raise money for the victims of the Haiti earthquake and I want to do something similar again.

But I need your help. What should I make? What would you be likely to bid on in an online auction? What do you think would raise some serious bucks? A dress from my Everything But The thread range? A screen printed t'shirt? A knitted/crocheted softie? A knitted girls' dress or cardigan? A crocheted cushion? Something else I can make?

Thank you so much for your help.

I hope you and your family are safe and well and happy. XX

  1. A crocheted cushion sounds enticing! Great idea you have there x

  2. I live about 30 mins from the Brisbane CBD and it is currently being evacuated because the outskirts of the city are already starting to go under. Most highways and main road, and BRIDGES are under water!! Husby works near the city and is about to evacuate himself. I think our house will be ok, but you never know. The reason this is all panning out so terribly is because we're experiencing KING TIDES!! At least we have warning of what's to come here in Brisbane. The poor people of Toowoomba and the Lockyer Valley had near to no warning to get out.

But to actually answer your question.. I would be interested in bidding on something for ME!! You make so many beautiful kiddies things, but as I have no kiddies I'd want something for little old selfish me :)

But I do recall you had your own flood disaster not too long ago! How have you recovered??

  3. Hey Kate, yes, it's devastaing and makes you feel terribly helpless. Also puts our own probs into perspective.
What could you auction? Some of your beautiful crochet would be great as previous comment suggested maybe a cushion. But anything, would be great, it's the act of doing and not just thinking about it.

    Great Idea....

  5. What a wonderful idea - and practical too. Win win. We're on the Sunshine Coast and cut off, but ok. I was thinking of helping out with seed packs for gardeners... I'm sure whatever you make will be wonderful.

  7. One of your girl's dresses is always a good idea, but a crocheted cushion sounds great too.

Have you seen what Toni @ Make it Perfect is organising?

  9. I can donate something too if you want to open up the auction.

Have a lovely cushion that is appearing in Jan's issue of Fat Quarterly.

  10. Maybe it's time for something similar to Handmade Help? There were some brilliant crafter responses during the bushfires - one blogger raised $20,000 with a yarn raffle - so surely we could do it again?

  11. Isn't it just awful. I feel so far away from it all down here in Hobart and I wish I could help. I can't believe they're evacuating the whole city. I'll be bidding on whatever you decide to make Kate. And I'm going to think of something to make and auction too.

it is so sad. People have been ringing us all morning because Bellingen is flooded too but we are all fine, when the town floods it just gets cut in half, all good, how could we possibly complain??? It is devastatingwhat is happening just a couple fo hours away.. xx

  14. Oh Kate you're just gorgeous.
And yes it's awful, I've been feeling very much like you.
Anything you make is always beautiful and so suitable.
But I'm loving the sound of a crocheted cushion or one of your dresses -perhaps for an adult?
    love you xo

  17. A screen print of some sort. I love your print designs! You could also get your kids to design something as well to use as a screen print too.

  18. Hi Kate

I think a custom dress would be fantastic, from the bidders own fabric or yours. I've joined with Toni from Make it Perfect here, http://tonicoward.blogspot.com/ where she is compiling a master list of bloggers who are willing to donate or auction an item for the flood relief.

  19. Great idea Kate - I'd always go for a softie i think, but a crocheted cushion sounds great too!XX

  20. Brilliant idea Kate, how about one of your lovely crochet beanies??

It really puts life into perspective doesn't it. I do wish they would not show such graphic images on the TV as its hard to censor it for the kids. Once it in there its in there and I also feel that its a bit disrespectful to the families involved... Disaster News never used to be so in your face, I don't think we ever saw a body on the TV but now....am I the only one who feels like this??

  26. I am sure that anything you made Kate would be a wonderful help! I think if there was another Handmade Help it would be fantastic as the one for the bushfire victims did so well. I have been watching a little bit on tv but it is so sad and makes you feel helpless. I am glad my auntie came down from Qld in the last few weeks, otherwise she might have been stuck somewhere in the floods.
