Making.

Last night I cast off the Stripey Green Skirt test knit.

I am a slow knitter but this pattern used thick needles and chunky yarn and knitted up quite quickly, even for me.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I love how different sequences of purl and knit make such great shapes. Pleats! How cool!

Now I'm just knitting the icord, (thanks youtube lady for the how to), that ties around the waist and holds it up. An icord is a pretty cool thing to know how to knit I think. All you need is some yarn and two double pointed sticks and you can create a cord. Knitting geek! Knitting geek!

When I'm done I'll get Miss Pepper to try it on for size. I'm thinking it'll look a bit cute with a white t'shirt and leggings.

This morning I hooked up a couple of grannies, lined them stitched them on, unstitched them, sewed them on straighter, for the dress for a little Busy girl to wear to a wedding. She's into pockets at the moment apparently. I wonder what treasures she'll put in them.

Actually now I'm seeing it from a bit of a distance, I think I might replace the green one with a cream one. Less in your face I think.

Actually, now I'm not even so sure about the grannies. I think they take over a bit. Hmmm.... better think about that one a bit more.

Today I received a package in the post FULL of gorgeous old patterns from a lovely lady called Glenda who reads my blog and thought I might like them. I do!

If I had time in an oppy to rummage through a pile of patterns, I would choose these ones to buy and to sew for my girls. I love them all. They are just my style.

Thank you so much Glenda!

And I've been baking meringues and making jam for a produce market this weekend. My house constantly feels sticky and smells like cooking fruit but my taste testers are happy.

So on with the week we go.

I hope its a happy and healthy and fun and creative one for us all.

Bye now. XX

  4. I love the pockets! But if you wanted to change them could you use little cotton doileys from the oppy? They might be a bit more delicate?

    And mini meringues - yummo!

  6. LOVE the skirt... I hope you made it for your eldest that way it can be passed down the line and get more wear & tear for your effort.

  7. I didn't know you could knit a cord, I just assumed it would have to be crocheted! This is my first comment but I have been stalking you for a bit, love your blog! Also love the dress, don't rethink, the pockets are cute. I hate to admit this, but I can't work out how to do the sleeves work. Can you direct me to an online tute? I am guessing, without sleeves, the dress is a rectangle drawn in with elastic, but the sleeves..... ? Thanks!

  8. You are so not a slow knitter!
I like the granny pockets, perhaps if you wanted to minimise the effect then just the pink one would do?

  9. Busy is going to look gorgeous, maybe you could add a bit of lace to the top of the granny squares, might make them so not in your face :)

Love the skirt, how would you go knitting one for me LOL

  10. I think whichever way you go with the pockets they will be different. hehe Maybe you could crochet a contasting bow or sew on a different button but actually I do think they are fine as they are. Cherrie

  12. The skirt looks great Kate and I love the pleats! The little dress looks so very cute. I could imagine cream doilies too but the granny squares look just as nice. Have fun at the market!

  18. I would be ever so happy if my home smelled of jam! I can't imagine ever making one pot, let alone a whole batch to sell at the markets. You are living the dream, my love.

For what it's worth, I like the granny square pockets (though agree that cream would possibly work best) AND I LOVE that stripey knit skirt to bits. x

  19. For a slow knitter you are pretty damn quick methinks.
You should get (or make) the girls a knitting nancy and they will be churning out icord for you by the metre.

With the pockets have you tried them on the diagonal? maybe even with a teeny bit of the point folded over so you can see the lining?

We've been jam making too but I doubt as much as you :).

  20. I love the granny square pockets as well but also like the comment above about putting them on the diagonal with a corner folded over to see the lining- how about having just one pocket like that over the middle of the chest area- more like a high pouch than a pocket. The knitted skirt is divine by the way.

  22. I like the dress, do not take away the granny pockets!

I will be making chutney and fig jam over the next couple of days :)

  23. Hmmm... meringues... my favourite :) They don't last long here either. Loving Busy's dress and I think the grannies are fantastic, but I see what you mean about cream rather than green. That yellow and brown fabric on the frill is just the most gorgeous fabric I've ever seen. AND totally salivating over those patterns - what a lovely gift. Kx

  24. Aargh! I forgot the skirt! Kate, I really REALLY love this skirt. It is just fabulous and all kinds of wonderful (as Ms T would say... maybe she will say it!). My mind is already buzzing with plans to crochet one for myself... not sure how I'd do the pleats but will find some way to wing it :) Thanks for the wonderful inspiration. Kx

  31. That skirt is definately on the to do list. The dress is fine but, yes, that pocket does stand out a bit. The smell of cooking jam reminds me of growing up- cooking raspberry jam with my nan in the holidays. Bravo to Glenda. Anyhow, scurrying off to find out how to do an icord lest I not be considered a true knitting geek lol.

  32. Love love love the pleated skirt! And crocheted pockets fab idea. I've done a fair bit of crochet but I'm knew to all the knitting malarkey and trying to figure out how to purl from the back nearly blew my mind today - thank god for YouTube!! Sane again now and continuing on with my first garment (inspired by the Tea leaves cardigan, but I thought that was a bit complicated for a beginner and picked an easier cardie - i hope! - to start). Really enjoy your posts :-)
