The P word.

For days and days I've been dying to get a chance to sew some stuff.

Earlier in the week I put aside this morning, Wednesday morning, to sew for a few hours and to sew alone. I have the house to myself and I have nothing else urgent to do. This is scheduled, time tabled sewing time.

But do you think I've started sewing yet??

Nope! I've washed the breakfast dishes, done a load of laundry, checked in to see what my Ravelry friends have been up to over night, read a few blogs, replied to a couple of emails, had a shower and washed my hair and now I'm procrastinating by writing this blog about procrastinating.

What's wrong with me?? Why don't I want to do the only thing I've wanted to do all week when I finally get a chance to do it? Why all of a sudden do I have this mad urge to sort through the odd socks basket? I think I'm a basket case. Its not as if this type of uninterrupted sewing time comes around all that often these days.

Ok, its time to get strict with myself. Its 9.40am, at 10am I will sew.

Does this sound at all familiar to you or do you think I'm cuckoo? Do you have to make deals with yourself? Do you sometimes need a bit of a push in the right direction?

Have a wonderful day out there. Hopefully I'll have something of the sewing kind to show and share in the very near future.

See ya. X

ps. Julie made the gorgeous pin cushion.

  1. I'm having the same problem here Kate.......just sorted the dress up box! So many more exciting things I could be doing. lol

  2. all too familiar.
I am currently- defrosting freezer- popped out to our 'sunroom' (where the computer and pantry are) to get more containers to re house freezer things, and just thought I would have a quick check of what my bloggy friends have been up to. Sewing is much more fun that freezer defrosting though. It's 10.42- I hope you have 42 mins worth of sewing under your belt by now!

  3. goodness---I thought it was just me! Hope you're making all manner of gorgeousness, Kate...

  4. I always want to be doing whatever I'm not meant to be doing right now. I'd prefer to be sewing than getting the kids into pj's and reading stories, I'd prefer to be hanging with my kids rather than sitting at working, and I'd prefer to be doing anything other than writing my Masters thesis!!

Hope you've managed to get stuck in and can't wait to see what you create.

  5. I absolutely know where you're coming from. I divert off to do things and spend far too much time looking at what everyone is making on the internet, when I had put aside a few hours to sew also. Must go now and do so! Good luck with your project :)

  6. Oh yes! I do know just what you mean. And after much thought and reading about it and chatting with my husband and mum and friends etc. for me, it has to do with feeling apprehensive about whether I can do the particular task to the standard I expect of myself. If I feel anxious about it, or unsure of what I'm doing, or certain I'll fail, I can think of a MILLION things more appealing to do! And it's all quite subconscious - until I sit myself down and give myself a stern talking to. Sometimes I don't even finish people's gifts and send them - but instead rush out at the last minute and buy something - because I'm all a fluster about whether it is alright. And I'll clean out the fridge and scrub the shower before I get stuck into finishing something. 'Cause when it's finished, then I"ll really know. What silly knots our brains twist us into. Now get sewing Kate - I thought the P word was going to be patchwork! :-)

  7. I am soooooo with you on this Kate and I could never figure it out.
But, I have finally realised that if the sewing I have to do is a little on the tedious and not the creative side then I tend to put it off.
Once I get into it I am fine, it's just taking that first step.

Hope you have managed to get some done, time at home on your own is very rare. Enjoy it.

    Claire :)

  9. My days always start like this...
Now I have a batch of cupcakes in a very secondhand camp stove that I received today as a gift until I get a proper stove...So I thought I would try it out with a fool proof recipe...
crossing fingers I don't blow the house up...lol...

  10. I am hoping you have lost yourself in creativity by now , it soothes .

  11. My whole life if about making deals with myself. If it weren't for that mentality, I'd never get boring uni assignments done. Don't push yourself though. Maybe you just need to rest and have a cuppa?

  12. This is like looking in a
Wednesday morning mirror! I too am kiddie free on Wednesday morning and normally set it aside to do things just for me - so far I've done nothing that I wanted and run about 20 errands for the rest of the family!

Btw - loooooove your pin cushion!

  14. It sounds very familiar Kate! I look forward to sewing all day and then at night sit wasting time surfing the internet! Once I get started I'm fine but it's super frustrating isn't it?

  15. Quite familiar. You see, I can't seem to sew since my sewing area is a mess and must be cleaned up. Somehow this leads to a load of laundry, a clean out of the linen closet, an odd moment of window washing, an email or two, and a half hour of cat brushing. Suddenly it's time for school pick up. Yup, that is exactly what happened today. And now I am away to tend to the Mexicali Pie in the oven.
I hope you stitched up a dream!

  20. I was going to write a post about why I can't motivate myself, when I really DO want to tackle that sewing pile - I have gorgoeus new fabrics to try - when I got distracted! That, "I'll just check the blogs/email/do the laundry etc!"
I think it's the pile of untamed fabric - that will be turned into something gorgeous, but could just as easily turn out not as good as i think they will - and who can deal with that on a Wednesday morning ???
Hope you are sewing and not bereating yourself too much Kate :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. No you are not nuts Kate! It's because sewing is a creative thing and it can only be done when you are in a creative mood. Such things can not be scheduled! Unfortunately life can't always be fair to us and maybe it will just have to be at another time. Good luck for later in the week.

  22. Definitely not cuckoo. You have to sew when the urge strikes to do your best work but sometimes working on small increments then doing the other bits as rewards works to get me back into the swing of things. Sometimes. Cherrie

  26. I spend far too much time thinking about what I want to do and not enough doing, by the time I get going it's time to stop...and side tracked by...oooh what's that pretty shiny thing there!
Hope you got some sewing in Kate.

  27. Ha Ha - this is so familiar. Hope you finally got into it and enjoyed yourself to the max!

  28. Hi Kate..I have been stuck for two days now..I have an apron to make and some more cushions but am not really decided and don't know exactly how I want the next project to look. When I know exactly what the next thing looks like in my head and I am excited about that, then I will sew with gusto! {passion}

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh my goodness! Yes, this is me!
I have so much to do, it is becoming too much...so knitting is happening instead ;)

    ReplyDelete
  30. i came on here just now to procrastinate about cleaning the bathroom....I forced myself into the sewing room this morning...I wasn't allowed to go get a coffeee until i had sewn something.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Oh boy Kate, you said it!! Procrastination and I are great friends, we hang out together every unencumbered chance we get.

I say wrestle it to the ground, I'll cheer you on!... course I will of course be procrastinating. : )

    ReplyDelete
  32. This is so familiar! and I have to tell you I'm so relieved too... I thought the P word was going to be about periods and having 'the talk' ;) Kx

  33. your post describes my Thursdays! I find it sooo hard to get started sometimes! I hope the deal making worked for you today! xo

  34. Yes, Yes, Yes and Yes.
Have a thoroughly good Thursday :)

  35. You are not alone - I had huge plans this week to clean the house. Have a house inspection on Monday and thought that if I started and cleaned from the left and kept walking around I would have a clean house - WRONG. I have a clean house from the TV to the computer - opps - I seem to stop here and that is where I stay LOL. Must do something on Friday about that.

  36. Procrastination is an art!
Don't let any of the "doers" tell you otherwise.
If it were a qualification I would be well on the way to my doctorate!
And as long as your procrastination is productive surely that's OK ... isn't it???

    ReplyDelete
  37. Oooo I hope you did get into sewing up a storm after all the procrastination :o)
But yes, I know all too well that feeling of "what am I DOING with myself", when I get a window of opportunity to do things and then waste it. I think it's in all of us :o/
P.S. Thank you for the lovely comment about my little boy, made me smile!

  38. Kate, I know exactly what you mean. There is a sense that sewing/knitting/crocheting is less worthy of our time than washing, cooking, cleaning, sorting socks! It is true we need to schedule time as it is important, and worthy. Always remember a happy you, is a happy mum/wife/homemaker! What could be more worthy of our time than creating a little happiness???

  39. Its all all all to to to familiar! Welcome to my world!!!

    ReplyDelete
  40. ...and you know that the next time you have all the girls clammering for your attention on a zillion different levels along with Farmer Bren and the farm boys all needing you for...well...anything really... and there is stuff that must be done in the house/errands in town etc etc then THAT is definitely the time you will sit down to some fabulous sewing and get it done!!! TK xx ps - I thought the P Word was pincushion and you were going to send me yours ( I don't sew at all BUT it would still look lovely in my home!!)

    ReplyDelete
  41. When you remove the spontaneity, its a bit lack lustre....for me anyhow.
I have just had two days off. I hoped, planned, dreamed and yes...scheduled some sewing...but only sometime in those two days....well i actually managed ONE WHOLE DAY...hee hee.....and loved every minute of it. It was real rainy, grey, cool and crisp weather here in the mountains too...very conducive for being creative inside..i too am gathering myself a nice pile of recycled sheets. Enjoy those girls Kate.....soon...they will be older x

  42. Haha sounds very familiar! I've found that although sometimes I need to kick myself in the behind and just get on with it, at other times I need to relax and wait until it feels right, otherwise I end up making mistakes and breaking needles and getting all in a mess! Have a lovely sunshine day. xo

    ReplyDelete
  43. You have described me in a nut shell....I am in a bit of a funk at the moment which I can't seem to get out of.
    Happy sewing
    xx

    ReplyDelete
  44. I know what you mean exactly:) I've been feeling like this a bit lately, maybe it's the weather? Why do we do it to ourselves I'll never know. I'm glad that you got that sewing done, looking at your creative space it seems like you were very productive, no more procrastinating. xo

    ReplyDelete
  45. I totally get it too. I wither away the time I have organised so hard to get, then end up going to bed at 3am because THAT's when the inspiration hit. What's with that?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Im sitting right there with ya in that cuckoo's nest holding your hand babe!

    ReplyDelete
  47. if you are cuckoo you have plenty of company in the nest. i do it ALL the time. i think its all about self doubt. not starting = no failure to finish.
the sock basket is the safe option
    now get cracking
